Charleston coach with record of 80-38 is fired

There is likely more to this story than is surfacing, so far. Tommy Herrion was an assistant under Pete Gillan at Virginia, and was a hot young coach when hired by the College of Charleston 4 years ago. He has a 4 year record of 80-38 (.67, and has had seasons of 25-8, 20-9, 18-11, and 17-11.

Fox Sports is reporting that he will be fired, despite never having anything close to a losing season, and despite having 4 years left on his current contract.

Herrion gets a pretty nice payday.

College of Charleston will buy out the remaining 4 years of his contract for $787,000.

More stuff leaking out, as College of Charleston brought in Gregg Marshall, the coach at Winthrop, and he first said he'd take the job, then immediately bolted when he found out about some "baggage" that goes with the job, including some very wealthy and influential alumni and "boosters" (some of whom are trustees) who apparently run the show at Charleston and have more pull than the coaches there.
Marshall wanted NOTHING to do with such a volatile situation and said so in his parting blow.
The Charleston press then takes a few swipes at Gregg Marshall.

PS--coincidentally, the College of Charleston message board was started on Jan. 15, 2005, THE EXACT SAME DAY that Bradleyfans was begun, but has about half the posters and well less than half the activity over that span, but still a very nice board for a school of its size.
