This is very sad, if true.
Here are a couple more reports from different media.
The News-Gazette article has slightly more info than the other reports.--
News about Chicago sports from the Chicago Tribune: Bears, Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks, Sky and more.
Just recently there have been several articles that have reported how well Jamar was shooting and how he was looking forward to returning to the Illini--
High hopes for Smith rebound (7/16/08 )-
Extended 3-point arc doesn't faze Illini (7/14/08 )-http://media.www.dailyillini.com/med...-3390435.shtml

He was hanging out in local Peoria bars earlier this year. This doesn't surprise me. It's sad, he's a talented kid. Unfortunately it looks like basketball isn't very important to him.
I wonder if Kyle Whelliston will be calling for Weber's job. If he called for Jim's because of the Ruffin situation, the THIRD repeat offender in the Weber regime (Luther Head, Richard McBride) should be enough garner the 'Renegade Program' tag from Mr. Whelliston. But for some reason, I don't think Kyle will ask for Weber's job.Onward and Upward!

If he did, he has never shown to be inconsistent, and I'm sure he would have some choice words for this situation.

Definitely bad news for Illinois basketball fans, but way worse for Jamar Smith himself. If this proves to be true, he may have effectively ended his basketball career. I hope Jamar can work through his personal issues and lead a productive life.

I emailed Kyle to ask him about this, so you won't need to stick up for him anymore. I would like to know what his real motivation was for writing the Jim Les blog, and where he's really getting his information from.Onward and Upward!

The following is just my opinion after reading the reports today-
At this point in his life, I think Jamar and his family have more to worry about than his basketball future. They need to be concerned for Jamar's life and wellbeing. I think he needs to get away from Champaign and the people who he thinks care for him and call themselves his friends. They are not his friend if they allow him to continue to pursue this course of self-destructive behavior. Jamar is lucky to be alive and that he hasn't killed anyone with his behavior.
Where is the support staff in the Illinois Athletic Department?
Where are the rules and discipline that might have prevented this?
I hope he gets the help he needs, but I do not see that such help is there at UIUC. In fact, all I see are enablers.
It's not too late to transfer to a D2 school, get well, play out his career, and then pursue a pro career. I wish the best for him.
By the way, the penalty for violating his probation, which he has already apparently admitted to is 1 to 14 years in jail.
