This is very sad, if true.

Here are a couple more reports from different media.
The News-Gazette article has slightly more info than the other reports.--

Just recently there have been several articles that have reported how well Jamar was shooting and how he was looking forward to returning to the Illini--
High hopes for Smith rebound (7/16/08 )-

      Extended 3-point arc doesn't faze Illini (7/14/08 )-http://media.www.dailyillini.com/med...-3390435.shtml

He was hanging out in local Peoria bars earlier this year. This doesn't surprise me. It's sad, he's a talented kid. Unfortunately it looks like basketball isn't very important to him.

I wonder if Kyle Whelliston will be calling for Weber's job. If he called for Jim's because of the Ruffin situation, the THIRD repeat offender in the Weber regime (Luther Head, Richard McBride) should be enough garner the 'Renegade Program' tag from Mr. Whelliston. But for some reason, I don't think Kyle will ask for Weber's job.

C'mon Jamar, not only are you gonna screw up, you're going to do it at a place named "Fubar?" The irony is almost too much.....
A real fan celebrates the successes, but also acknowledges the failures of his team.

Seeing as how Kyle pays zero attention to the BCS schools, why would he?

If he did, he has never shown to be inconsistent, and I'm sure he would have some choice words for this situation.

Definitely bad news for Illinois basketball fans, but way worse for Jamar Smith himself. If this proves to be true, he may have effectively ended his basketball career. I hope Jamar can work through his personal issues and lead a productive life.

He's never shown to be inconsistent? Really? SIU had drinking incidents a few years back involving Stetson Hairston and Jamal Tatum, and before that harbored a convicted felon in Rolen Roberts. ISU has had a myriad of incidents over the past year involving drinking, alcohol, and driving. I don't read Whelliston as much as you, but I don't recall Weber, Lowery, or Jankovich's job status being questioned.

I emailed Kyle to ask him about this, so you won't need to stick up for him anymore. I would like to know what his real motivation was for writing the Jim Les blog, and where he's really getting his information from.

I don't recall SIU and ISU players being given scrubbing floors as adequate initial punishment, either.

Yeah, missing that Athletes in Action game was a real harsh punishment for Jamal Tatum. Did Levi Dyer even get punished? According to you and Whelliston, Lowery and Jank should be canned along with Les. Yet I only hear the cries for one firing. I'd like to know why.

Maybe it was all the pressure dooming JS to failure.

                      He shoulda just gone pro.

McClain said he could be a future lottery pick... that means he's at least good enough now to get on somewhere.

After what happened the 1st time Illinois should revoke his scholarship as a person almost died in that accident and he has not learned his lesson if he broke his probation . There is simply no excuse for this and he should be sent home.

Here is a story with slightly more details.

I know it is a bit premature to speculate, but I can't see how Illinois can continue to keep him on scholarship
even though he was an important part of their hopes to be better this season.
That's if he can get a VISA.

The following is just my opinion after reading the reports today-

At this point in his life, I think Jamar and his family have more to worry about than his basketball future. They need to be concerned for Jamar's life and wellbeing. I think he needs to get away from Champaign and the people who he thinks care for him and call themselves his friends. They are not his friend if they allow him to continue to pursue this course of self-destructive behavior. Jamar is lucky to be alive and that he hasn't killed anyone with his behavior.
Where is the support staff in the Illinois Athletic Department?
Where are the rules and discipline that might have prevented this?

I hope he gets the help he needs, but I do not see that such help is there at UIUC. In fact, all I see are enablers.
It's not too late to transfer to a D2 school, get well, play out his career, and then pursue a pro career. I wish the best for him.

By the way, the penalty for violating his probation, which he has already apparently admitted to is 1 to 14 years in jail.

Technically he hasn't admitted to violating his probation, he just turned himself in to the police, according to the Daily Illini article. However, I would think it's highly likely that he will plead guilty when he is arraigned.
