Patrick O'Bryant signed by Celtics

I don't come back to this board much.

I'm really shocked that he got signed. I read nothing coming up to this that made me think he would have a home in the NBA next year (especially in Boston since reports of his workout were horrible). Good news for him, and I'm really surprised he got signed this early with far superior free agents available.

As said before, let's wait and see if he gets playing time and stays on the roster. He 'should' be able to develop finally with the Celtics. The Cs are probably one of the last teams that I would have expected to sign him (low risk signing I guess). They don't have a premier big man (I don't consider Garnett a big) so he has no excuse about not getting playing time.

Good luck to POB next year. Is he playing summer league for Boston then?

Make up your mind pal and get "on board" as a fan! Obviously, the Celtics know MUCH more about pro ball and developing big men than you ever will! Maybe you should just stick with the "other board" as they seem to be more your type and think as you do.

Today's Globe article says that the POB impressed the Celtics enough to sign him. Sounds like the rumours of POB not having a good showin at the workout were premature.

"The Celtics had interest in other free agent centers, such as New Orleans's Chris Andersen, Indiana's David Harrison, and New York's Randolph Morris, but O'Bryant impressed them during a workout July 4. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge doesn't expect to sign any other big men."

In other posts, it was speculated if POB's lack of NBA progress hurt the Braves. I think those sort of questions are a bit looney. Personnally, I think POB would have been better staying two more years in college, but his early departure and subsequent NBA play hasn't had any negative impact on Bradley. He has the talent to play in the NBA. Now that he is two years older, stronger, wiser and with a better team for his playing style, I think he can begin making a contribution if he puts in the effort necessary.

POB is still very young and best of all free of injury! He's in a real great situation and I wish him all the best. It goes to prove it again you cannot believe everything that is printed. When will we learn?

Why be so tough on Triman? We all hope POB makes it with the Champs and is very successful. But he hasn't played a minute with them yet. Lets wait and see and hope the best for him.

Does AV23 or anyone know what uniform number Patrick will wear with the Celts? He was #26 with the Warriors, and that number is available for the Celts. Unfortunately, his old #13 that he wore at Bradley is not available. Celtics guard Gabe Pruitt wore #13 last year.

That's not a contradiction. I think that he could have a chance to develop with the Celtics since they are regarded as having good coaches. I would hope that the coaches want him in Boston, unlike GS, and are planning on developing him into a regular player.

I don't know what other board of which you are speaking. I pay more attention to other things in the summer than college basketball.

POB hasn't been injury free. He broke his right foot during his rookie year.

I don't dislike POB, but I don't think he was ready for the NBA nor good enough to remain in the NBA this year (although the Celtics disagree with me and they are probably better at evaluating players).



(I would like to know what board you think I go to instead. I'm confused with that statement.)

As far as his place in the rotation, I think it's too early to tell. Perkins will start... but POB has a good chance to be the backup, especially if he can outplay Davis, who is more of a four in the NBA, anyway.

I wrote that POB has been injury free but I meant anything really major like a bad back, knee damage, shoulder dislocation. The guy is virtually for NBA level very healthy and has not had to go under the knife!

New day, new attitude. Let me apologize if my previous post toward Triman was perceived as hostile (I guess it kind of was).

I was simply fed up with all of the POB criticism. We don't ever criticize our former players who go on to play overseas. Instead, we lavish praise on them for having a "pro" career. However, our one recent player (POB) who is in the NBA is constantly criticized here and said to be "not ready", or "should never have left BU". I guess I'd just like to see the same "blind" support for POB that I see for our other ex-players.....Once a Brave always a Brave

POB is one of only two former Braves currently in the NBA and we should all be proud of that even if he never becomes more than a little used "bench warmer". I expect him to play a critical role on a good Celtics team

I am sure that Doc Rivers realizes that Patrick is still quite young,
and that he is the same age as the just drafted college seniors.
Practicing against Garnett and Perkins and having these 2 as your
mentors can only help Patrick. Once Patrick starts to truly contribute
in the NBA, I am also sure that the Warrior's management will realize
that they let a gem get away.

I, for one, was surprised to see this signing and so quick at that. The Celtics must have seen something to feel like they can help him develop into a true NBA center. It is a fact that being drafted by GS was a mistake even though GS didn't know it at the time. It became a mistake as soon as they hired Nellie as their coach as he doesn't like playing true centers. Boston may very well be a great fit for him as they may push him a lot harder than a team like GS.
GOOD LUCK POB, make the most out of this oppurtunity and work your tail off to becaome all that you can be (and while you are at it GET YOURSELF A CHAMPIONSHIP RING

I think it's a nice move by the Celtics. From Boston's perspective it's just like adding another talented draft pick. POB is around the same age as guys like Joe Alexander, Brandon Rush, Roy Hibbert, Courtney Lee, D.J. White and is actually younger than Boston's 1st round choice this year, J.R. Giddens. GM's were drooling over this year's group of young, athletic bigs that still have a lot to prove (Lopez, Randolph, Speights, McGee, Ajinca, Jordan). Boston just landed one that has equal upside, but already has a couple years of professional life under his belt. Plus he fits the Celtics theme of guys that have been stuck in difficult situations, hated on, and are eager to prove they are NBA winners. What a great situation to learn from Ray Allen's professionalism, Garnett's passion, and Pierce/Rondo/Davis/Powe's drive to prove people wrong. Hope he sticks.

Think about it....... It's just like buying a "new" car from a friend who bought it a month ago and parked it in the garage... UNDRIVEN. Except you're buying it from him at over a 50% mark-down . That's exactly what the Celtics did. They picked up a lottery pick player at a 50% contract discount. It's a no lose for them.

Very good point about POB being a bargain. This would be his rookie season had he stayed at BU for 4 years, so really they have a player w/ some NBA experience getting paid like a late 1st round or even early 2nd round pick. By signing POB this way it was like an extra draft pick.
