In an unususal move, Birmingham Southern University has dropped out of Division I and become Div III. They become the first school since 1988 to do so. The cost of athletic scholarships was a major factor. Many smaller Div I schools draw very little revenue and spend millions on their athletic programs. NCAA rules and Title IX requirements force Div I schools to field many sports that are guaranteed huge money losers. The move will save millions a year for the school.
