  • Furor over Chris Lowery's salary & raise

  • #2
As was noted elsewhere, and is only a fact that cannot be denied,
Chris Lowery took over an NCAA caliber team that had lost only 5 games (and only ONE conference game), and inherited a team that was almost all returning, and each of the two years he has coached now, he has lost roughly 50% more games than the team did the year before. As he loses the players Bruce Weber and Matt Painter recruited, he is losing more games. In a couple years, the fans will turn on him and his job security will vanish.
I know this will be viewed as a slam by SIU fans, but it cannot be denied. Is he worth a raise after only his 2nd such season?

I think it's kind of fishy that they are raising tutition and giving their coach a raise. Obviously they don't need to raise the tutition to get money for the raise, but it doesn't help the situation at all.

Even more uproar over the pay raise for Lowery

Here is part of the article, "But at least one SIUC employee spoke out against the raise. Ruth Pommier, a former president of the school's largest civil service employees union, has opposed almost every athletic salary increase the university has proposed in recent years.

Pommier wrote the board of trustees, stating $45,000 "is more than many will realize in their lifetime.""

Maybe JL's Yugo / Ferarri simile (re: comparative education value) is more accurate than we originally thought!!

What surprises me is .... did SIU really see a NEED to increase his salary? I would consider 'being VERY successful and deserving' or 'being a candidate for resignation due to a better offer elsewhere' as reasons to sweeten the pot for their current coach.

IMO, I agree with T on the first one, he has taken the reigns of a successful program and time will tell whether he is 'VERY successful and deserving'. This leads into part two, being VERY successful is bait for better offers elsewhere - I think the next couple to 4/5 years will show what kind of coach he is at a fine institution in a great league with great facilities.

So I say time will tell. Salary increase now? IMO, no.

Let me just illustrate an example

Bradley after Versace for 2 seasons under Albeck

              43-17 overall (72% Win Percentage)
22-6 in conference (79% win percentage)
post season: once, 1st Round yr 2

SIU after (Weber &) Painter for 2 seasons under Lowery

              49-19 overall (72% Win Percentage)
27-9 in conference (75% Win Percentage)
post season: twice, 2nd Round yr 1, 1st Round yr 2

My point? 'Savour the Flavour' - 'Wait and See'

Matt Painter was Weber's main recruiter and recruited all the players that made Weber successful at SIU. I am pretty sure Lowery never recruited any players who played at SIU for Weber. That's because Lowery was only an assistant at SIU for 1 season under Weber in 2001-2002 and 1 under Painter in 2002-2003. He did help recruit some of the players currently playing at SIU. Weber hired him at Illinois for 1 year in 2003-2004 where he recruited for Weber. He then returned as head coach the last 2 years.

Flipper, I don't know the specifics because BU doesn't publish Les' salary. However, from what I have heard his total package is much higher. Someone here once posted a range for Les.......I believe it was around $400,000? (though I could be wrong)

didn't realize lowery was so young and unproven. looks like the siu downword spiral in their basketball program has begun and will continue under lowery's questionable leadership.

great. like coach les makes more than $100,000 more than lowery which makes sense since lowery has siu basketball on the decline while coach les has bu basketball on the upswing.

Chris Lowery comes out swinging and defends his big pay raise!
                            He even rips his critics,

"I'm just really surprised at the things people are saying. ..."

"I've never complained about missing my kids's birthday parties or not being with my family because of my job."

"We're watching the news the other night and they have a poll on there about 'Does Chris Lowery deserve a raise?' My daughter is asking, 'Why don't people like you, Daddy?'" Lowery said. "Kids don't understand. What do you say? Do you tell them you can only go so far?"
