  • SEMO Basketball Gets Hammered by NCAA

Southeast Missouri State gave away a few meals, some free rides in a team bus and a coach's car, and a couple
athletes stayed in free housing during the summer when school was out and they were helping at summer camps.....a serious violation in the NCAA's eye's,
    and so..........
The NCAA even agrees, that there are virtually NOTHING BUT SECONDARY VIOLATIONS here...
but they still hammer SEMO with huge penalties!

    • Public reprimand and censure.
    • Two years of probation (June 18, 2008, to June 17, 2010).
    • Reduction of women’s basketball scholarships in the 2006-07 academic year from 15 to 12. (Self-imposed by institution).
    • Reduction of women’s basketball recruiting days from 85 to 80 between September 2006 and August 2007. (Self-imposed by institution).
    • Prohibition of off-campus recruiting by the former women’s basketball head coach during the July 2006 evaluation period. (Self-imposed by institution).
    • Financial penalty of $12,600 upon the men’s basketball program in the 2006-07 fiscal year. This amount is twice the value of the costs associated with the three men’s basketball student-athletes who traveled to away games. (Self-imposed by institution).
    • Reduction in the number of recruiting days in men’s basketball from 130 to 125 between September 2006 and August 2007. (Self-imposed by institution).
    • Vacate all wins in which ineligible student-athletes competed

Does it seem these violations are so much more severe than Reggie Bush getting $300,000 of freebies, and so much more severe than OJ Mayo getting $30,000 of freebies, and Kansas' Darnell Jackson getting $10,000 of "unrepayable loans" (freebies/bribes)??

I am not condoning rule-breaking if indeed that's what SEMO did......
I am all in favor of keeping all NCAA schools following the rules.
    BUT..........what does everyone think?

    Tornado,

This not surprising in the least. The NCAA does not even try to hide its preferencial treatment of its various members. This has been going on forever and it will never change. Nothing will happen of any substance to USC regarding Mayo, nothing at all will ever happen to USC regarding Bush, very little if anything will happen to Indiana and Kansas well that will be forgotten soon by the NCAA and the best thing is, no one will ever do anything about it.

The NCAA is about one solitary thing and that is MONEY. SEMO, UT Chattanoga, Alabama State mean nothing because they do not bring in MONEY. But BCS does and they are untouchable.

The punishments handed out are purely based on who the offending institution is and has absolutely nothing to do with the severity of the infraction. Becuase if that were not true, the whole Reggie Bush, USC thing would not take over 2 years to investigate and they would have penalized already. But, if they punish a school like SEMO that shows they are enforcing rules, its just they are not enforcing their rules on everyone.

Actually Im not sure why if you are a BCS school why you would not cheat, why not even if your caught nothing happens, just some PR spin and the NCAA dragging their feet until it is determined there is no evidence.

Houston...recall that Ohio State had far, far worse violations when they were caught paying huge $$ to recruits.
Their mens basketball coach gave thousands of dollars, free living arrangements, free housing, and, yes, even free live-in maid & nanny service, which was later revealed to even extend to free sexual services for a recruit.
All of this was discovered and proven, and there was even worse effort by the Ohio State people to hide it, lie about it, and cover it up, but you know the rest of the story.
Ohio State did get punished....but not even near as hard as SEMO got hammered with, and within TWO years under a new coach, Ohio State is making millions again getting all the way to the Final Four!
PLUS....then O'Brien and OSU appealed and their probation period was cut by 60%!!!

Here's another example....a tiny DII had one of their swimming athletes got hired by the head coach for a job, some other personal expenses were paid, and some other almost insignificant clerical violations, and yet Indiana Univ. of Pennsylvania also got hit harder than you can expect Indiana or USC to ever get hit.

      Houston....here is a trivia question...........

Which of the following universities have had MORE Major NCAA violations than Bradley has?
Illinois, Kansas, Wisconsin, UCLA, Kentucky, Michigan, USC, West Virginia, Washington, or say....Wichita State?

Answer......all of them, but none were nearly so severely penalized as someone like
SEMO when they commit some pretty insignificant violations!

In all seriousness, I would send this information (and other information of the like) to Mike Tirico. On his afternoon radio show with Scott Van Pelt, he has called out the NCAA and specifically Myles Brand for being the biggest hypocrite in sports today, citing the different sets of rules that are in place for basketball and football, and for hiding behind the shield of 'academic integrity' when in reality money is the true motivator. He may never mention it on the air, but the fact that even an employee of 'the network' is starting to acknowledge the hypocrisy I think speaks well as to just how bad things have gotten under Brand.
        Onward and Upward!

Hey-- read between the lines, and see exactly what players are the ones involved in the violations....

"The men's violations occurred in 2004-05 and 2005-06, when three transfers practiced and traveled with the team before they were eligible"

It seems there was a good liklihood one of the players responsible for these violations and these major sanctions was
            Michael Rembert
