I guess you could also subtitle this comment "Almost all schools, even the big ones lose LOTS of money subsidizing
their athletic departments and programs, and it DOES cost the taxpayers plenty even though they continue to
lie and claim that their sports programs are all self supporting and that taxpayers aren't subsidizing them!
Kelvin Sampson simply brings this to light big time at IU because of how much he cost the school!"
According to published reports, the costs are a sum of not only what they paid him and his staff, but also all the buyout costs,
the legal costs, and then even the difficult to assess cost of recruiting all those new players to replace the ones that bolted or
were dismissed, and the lost revenue from ticket sales and promotions.
So for the two years they had Sampson ($2 million per year salary plus the salaries of his overpaid staff), and the other costs
(buyouts=$1 million+, legal costs probably well over $1 million, and misc. costs=more than a $ million additional) then the costs
of having Kelvin for two years are probably close to $10 million!!
I guess you could say he costs the taxpayers plenty. And for those who naively and blindly recite the mantra
"the schools' athletic departments are self-supporting", I have news for you......
...note this.......
"fewer than 10 athletic departments out of more than 1,000 NCAA colleges generate a true surplus"
"Athletic Departments are Bleeding Universities Dry"
"For decades, while athletics departments have claimed that they balanced their budgets, critics have noted that that
was true only if the subsidies that the departments received from their colleges and other sources were counted as revenue."
PS-- one more bit of IU news...
Head coach Tom Crean just signed a marketing representation agreement with Louisville-based Blue Entertainment Sports Television.
These guys also represent Tubby Smith and Reggie Bush!
