  • More coaches "running players off"

New Mexico coach Steve Alford had 15 players committed to scholarships for next season (maximum allowable is 13), so it was a foregone conclusion at least 2 of his current scholarship plyers would have to leave. It just wasn't clear where those 2 scholarships would come from. As recently as last weekend, all the New Mexico players told reporters they were staying at UNM. But now it appears Alford has kicked 2 of his players out. Seniors-to-be Johnnie Harris and Monquel Pegues are reportedly not returning, though Alford and UNM refuse to confirm it.

What is interesting is that Steve Alford boasted, when he was hired at New Mexico a year ago, that he would never "run players off the team".

has the local newspaper in Albuquerque called and checked with the daddy's of either of those players who were run off?

Johnnie Harris (from Chipola) has reportedly transferred to Valparaiso.
Pegues was interested in Bradley............before choosing New Mexico

This is what happens when a jr. college player does not meet expectations and a coach is able to go out and recruit 4 year players to replace his mistakes; we need to remember that if the team does not win it is the coaching staff that gets blamed so they have to get what they feel is the best basketball players for their program and sometimes it means getting rid of players that did not meet their expectations, it is never easy to tell a player that he needs to look for another school as his scholarship is being taken by somebody else.
