  • Dave Reynolds article- 6/13/08

Dave Reynolds has an article today in the PJ Star about Peoria kids transferring to Washington and Limestone high schools.

In the article, Peoria Central coach Dan Ruffin, Woodruff coach Charlie Thomas, and Manual coach Derrick Booth are interviewed and complain bitterly about losing players who have transferred (Dyricus Simms-Edwards to Washington and Andrew Jordan to Limestone among others). Thomas is challenging Jordan's transfer, and trying to make a case that it isn't legal.

Now, it seems to me that these people have a short memory! The Peoria schools, Central, Manual, and Richwoods have been benefitting for decades from transfers within the city. For many years, players have tended to transfer to whichever school looked like they would have the best team. Dan Ruffin's own school, Peoria Central, benefitted perhaps more than any school with Shaun Livingston transferring there to help lead them to a couple state championships. Other schools, like Manual and Richwoods, also benefitted from numerous transfers as well.

Anyone who is remotely familiar with the Peoria area high school scene knows that the Peoria high schools have been vigorously recruiting players for many years, and nobody ever seemed to complain about it. There are numerous examples going back 20 years or more. Now that it is taking their players away from the city, suddenly they want to make a big legal case out of it.

I went to Limestone and find all this transfering to LCHS extremely interesting. Does anyone have any background or information on the coach Dan Sparrow?

Seems quite "interesting" all these players are moving/transfering out to Bartonville. Keep in mind that Pleasant Valley, which is in the Limestone district is actually closer in location to Manual then to Limestone.

in defense...many of those players from years gone by transferred of their own desire and free will..

the transfers nowadays are being recruited and engineered by coaches.

Which only goes to show how hypocritical those are who still whine endlessly about private schools, when 95% of all the recruiting going on is done by public schools.....
I get a little laugh since it is the chickens coming home to roost, as now the transferring is all going on under the hypocritical noses of the very people who have been demanding the rules be changed to prevent the privates from getting transfer kids!

Just look at all this..........even a comment about Tom Les recruiting!
Tons of recruiting going on....Michael Jordan's kids, all the kids at Simeon,
in fact half the top talent in and around Chicago are transferring and now it's happening in Peoria!

I find it interesting that you use the words own desire & free will. I have know many outside the city of Peoria that have complained about players moving and the recruiting that goes on w/i the city. As they say what goes around comes around and I really belive it is starting to happen.
What I do not understand is how someone can move to another school district and then the IHSA says they can't play for a year. If I decide to move then why is my child penailzed but kids w/i a school district like Peoria or Chicago can move to another school and it is never questioned by the state.

only when you transfer to a private school does the one year penalty apply.
Transfers to another public school are immediately eligible, just part of the anti-private school bias and legislating in IHSA.

If I already had college offers in my Freshman year of high school like Stewart and Jordan do, I would rather play in the Mid-Illini than the Mid State 6 too. Save for Washington, and Limestone(with the transfers) the Mid Illini is a far weaker conference than the Mid State 6. Why play in the tougher conference where you could be exposed, than to play in the Mid-Illini where you can keep up big time numbers?

              ..........Andrew Jordan to Limestone........
now there is hot talk on a few of the message boards in Champaign that Andrew Jordan has changed his mind again and will go to Manual this fall.
If this is true, then it really amplifies the point of Dave Reynolds' article,
that these kids seem to have the ability to go where they want and change as often as they want, and that is
clearly NOT what the IHSA would intend, but it's odd how the IHSA has only gone after the private schools on this issue and left the publics alone to do as they wish.

tornado, him going to Manual is a possibility, but if he is not at Limestone look for him to go to Richwoods. The kids i've talked to say something real shady is going on with outside influences. Two people in particular. He wants to go to Limestone but...... If you would like more details p.m. me better not put on this board. Dave Reynolds tried to make Limestone look bad and if he only knew what was going on he would retract that column with the truth.
