  • Eligibility Concerns/Salmonella, and other College Basketball News

A couple of kids BU was recruiting are having trouble getting cleared to play......and a few notes on some other stories in college basketball.

WARNING:...if you don't want to hear about kids at other schools, look away from the screen!

Lewis Jackson, has reportedly still not yet gotten a passing test score, and has not yet been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Reportedly the same is true of one or two SIU's recruits but there's still time to take the ACT once more, as the final offering is this Saturday, June 14!!

A couple brand new reports confirm that it IS Bobby Hill and his brother who are at the center of the eligibility issues at Vashon HS, and whose acceptance of impermissible benefits are responsible for the recent decision to strip Vashon of its titles from 2001-2006.
However, I have also heard that ISU will hold Hill out of any official activity at ISU until the NCAA rules on his eligiblity at the D-I level.
BUT...Hill isn't likely to be doing much on court or in the gym, as he just had surgery.
There is a brand new article by Pantagraph reporter Jim Benson saying Hill's knee surgery went well.

ISU also has another kid on campus and enrolled, even though they don't have a scholarship to give him, apparently.
That is unless head coach Tim Jankovich boots yet another player, which is almost certain since Kellen Thornton came all the way from a prep school on the east coast, so I doubt he is paying his own way.

One other of the ISU recruits, Lloyd Phillips, a juco guard out of Iowa, still hasn't finished his academic work and has yet to get his junior college associate degree, and is staying in summer school at Iowa Western CC, and has not yet arrived at ISU.

BUT-- here's the really oddball story, although I don't know if BU ever recruited this kid...

Robbie Hummel, outstanding forward at Purdue is in the news.......

    "Hummel deals with salmonella poisoning"

"Purdue forward and Valpo High grad Robbie Hummel has had a pretty adventurous summer so far.
He took a trip to Los Angeles where he toured Venice Beach and Huntington Beach. He also attended a Dodgers game against the Mets.
While in Los Angeles, though, Hummel ended up getting salmonella poisoning at the airport McDonald's.
He was later hospitalized and the illness was diagnosed and treated.
Hummel said he went from 205 pounds to 189 with the illness, but is back to 195 now.
While the salmonella poisoning was nasty, Hummel also had his tonsils removed a few weeks ago and said he feels much better after having the surgery.
On the lighter side, the Boilers' star was able to get away and do some fishing recently with his dad and uncle at Pelican Lake in Minnesota.
"I love it,'' said Hummel, who caught walleye, northern pike, bass and a few perch. "It's fun. I love relaxing and getting away from stuff.''

    One more tidbit to add........

tornados hit the campus of Kansas State yesterday causing an estimated $20 million in damages!
    Classes are canceled...

    More news from Kansas State........
Andy Katz did a little digging himself over the story on how much money Dalonte Hill is being paid as a 1st and 2nd year assistant basketball coach at K-State.
it is reportedly even more than some thought, it is $420,000, but it mainly a deal to land Michael Beasley at K-State. You have to wonder if any made it's way to Beasley, who is rumored to be driving BOTH a Hummer and a Range Rover around campus!!

Actually, with the new "Collie Scholarship" recently implemented by ISU, Dinma will give his scholarship up to Kellan because the new scholly is paying for his education...what a coincidence, huh?

Wow, I learn something new every day.

Here I thought the new "Collie Scholarship" was simply naming one of the 13 scholarships awarded to a member of the men's basketball team.

We have several scholarships that are funded directly by those that have made donations in the name of someone who had a great impact on Redbird athletics, and it is indeed an honor to be named as a recipient of one of these scholarships. In this case, the recognition requires specific academic achievement.

        Last year for example:

Doug Collins Endowment went to Dom Johnson
Will Robinson Endowment went to Anthony Slack
Milt Weisbecker Endowment went to Boo Richardson

That means ISU must have had 16 guys on scholarship last season. SWEET!

But why should I doubt you Scout4126....Your the same guy that swore Champ was walking on at ISU, and that came directly from Jank's mouth.

Cp, I find it a little funny that you attribute the words "honor" and "academic achievement" to an award that goes to someone with a, gasp, 2.5 gpa. Down the street at Bradley we call a 2.5 gpa "academic probation" or "get your arse in gear or you'll soon be gone." Weird how we can be so close in proximity but so far off in ideals and what constitutes "academic achievement." But I guess a 2.5 gpa (equivalent to a C average) is what you all really work so hard and strive for. Congratulations on your mediocrity there in (ironically) Normal.

Hey, if he's the one on the team getting that, imagine how great the focus on the student half of student-athlete must be across the board by our interstate 74 rivals....

Just curious, who was the other player that Jankovich booted?

Say what you want man. You know as well as I do, if BU gave out a similar Endowed Scholarship it would be praised and cheered here.

The honor part had to do with being part of something associated with James Collie.

And what Dinma has done at ISU is without a doubt quite the Academic Achievement.

and they even have one other kid (Vandello) who'll remain on scholarship but not even play (essentially booted from the team) or have that scholarship counted against the maximum!!

see above, but I find it odd that as a Redbird fan, you wouldn't have known that!
and don't forget, that Bobby Hill was booted back to junior college for a whole year.

I've seen it first hand on numerous occasions this summer, there is NOTHING wrong with Vandello's knees. He's moving as swift as ever in their open gyms.

You guys seem to forget that the NCAA had to approve Vandello's / ISU's request for a medical exemption. They had to show proof that a medicial condition (in this case degenerative knees) was indeed in place.

Here are quotes from Vandello himself:

"I have really enjoyed my last three years as an athlete at Illinois State, but unfortunately, due to uncontrollable factors, my playing career has to end sooner than I would have hoped," said Vandello. "But I understand that there are things larger than basketball left in my life, and I am concerned about the long-term effects this injury may have on my knees. Even though I won't be playing, I look forward to being around my teammates and coaches next season, because they are like a second family to me."

                              Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™
