  • UW/Bo Ryan

Just in case there are any Wisconsin fans...I found a story that was a little bit funny............
I guess coach BO Ryan is getting pretty tired of answering questions about his team's early exits from the NCAA tournament the past couple years...
and this is from one of the generally supportive Badgers' local media.......

" UW's Ryan not one to deal in reality"

"Interesting take by Badgers basketball coach Bo Ryan when asked at the Badger Days event at Lambeau Field whether this year's 73-56 loss to upstart Davidson in a NCAA Regional semifinal in Detroit continued to haunt him.

"As a professional, I deal in things a lot, lot more important than the last 40 minutes" Ryan said.
I coach for five, six months, and you're going to ask me about Davidson? That just doesn't make any sense to me.''

Of course not. That's because one of Ryan's highly seeded teams lost to a lower seed -- this time a double-digit seed -- for the second year in a row in the tournament. Or maybe it doesn't make sense because it brings home the reality that in the NCAAs, the Badgers are 0-5 against Nos. 1 through 8 seeds under Ryan.

But my guess is such a question would have made perfect sense if Ryan's last 40 minutes would have been in the NCAA championship game that ended in victory.

He would have been more than happy to talk about those 40 minutes."

Don't you think people are a little unrealistic? His teams have always been very good, he recruits good kids and they generally graduate. His record at UW in 7 seasons is 173-60 (84-30 in conference). His teams have won 2 Big Ten titles outright, and tied for a 3rd title, and the other 4 years they finished 2nd twice, 3rd once, and 4th once. And he has won 1 Big Ten Tournament championship. They made the NCAA all 7 years he's been there and have made it to the Elite 8 once and the Sweet 16 2 other times (3 times total).

His winning percentage at UW is .742.
His overall winning percentage as a head coach is .773, second among all coaches with 500 or more wins only to Roy Williams.
His winning percentage in the Big Ten is .737, which ranks #1 among all Big Ten coaches with at least 5 years of experience.

No, they don't have a national championship or a Final Four under Bo, yet. But I'd guess most schools would be happy with his record of success.

This is just karma for UW's refusal to let even distant, tiny school teams
(even high schools) use a logo that remotely resembles their precious "W" logo.

He also lost Devin Harris to the NBA a year early, no telling what that team could have done if he would have stayed another year. Arguably, he was the best player to play under Ryan.
