  • Purdue with surprise late signing

Purdue coach Matt Painter was not planning to sign any more players, but he saw Beech Grove 6'2" shooting guard John Hart in an open gym workout recently and was impressed enough to invite him to visit the Purdue campus. Yesterday, on his visit to Purdue, he accepted a scholarship offer.
Hart's only other offer to that point was from Evansville.

"A month ago, Purdue's Matt Painter had not heard of Beech Grove senior guard John Hart."
"Within a two-hour window, Hart went from wondering if he would have a college basketball opportunity to landing a scholarship with a team likely ranked in the preseason Top 10."
Painter said Thursday that he is surprised someone of Hart's ability flew under the recruiting radar screen.
"During the last recruiting period, I had numerous coaches telling me that John Hart is a very good player," Painter said.
"I stopped by Beech Grove for an open gym and could not believe that someone with his athleticism and skill was available."--

Purdue had already signed a shooting guard, Ryne Smith i the early signing period. Smith was also recruited by Bradley.

And more reports of quality players still available this late--

Ryan Allen is a 6'3" wing guard originally from Chicago, and finishing his final year at an East Coast prep school. He is the younger brother of Boston Celtic guard Tony Allen.--

And Mike Burwell, also a former Bradley recruit, has still not signed with anyone yet.

Wow, I'm surprised that Painter took a guard. I figured he'd be looking for a JUCO big man to fill the scholarship vacated by Scott Martin. They are awfully thin on the front line:

    Robbie Hummel 6'8'' 210
    JaJuan Johnson 6'10'' 205
    Nemanja Calasan 6'9'' 243

The only other experienced guy that *might* play at the PF is 6'4'' Marcus Green. They've also got 6'9'' 251 Chris Reid, who played 29 minutes last year as a JUCO transfer. That just seems like an awfully thin front line for a top 10 team, which I've seen them referenced as. I see them more in the 20-25 range next year due to lack of depth.

Painter better hope that none of those top three guys gets injured.

Ah, I didn't realize that Painter still had two more scholarships to give. So, he might still be looking for a JUCO big man.

On a side note, I found this quote from Hart interesting:

Face to face -- and before he signed me -- coach Painter told me that I am the most athletic person on their team.

Wonder what Lewis Jackson thinks of that one!
