Iowa leading scorer Tony Freeman transferring

He would have one year remaining. Above is a link to the Iowa Rivals Message Board thread where Bradley is discussed. The 2nd post is from a poster named "Boilers7740". He is an insider and tends to break big news before anybody else knows about it...recruits, injuries, etc. He spoke of Tony Freeman leaving Iowa before almost anybody else. Most people know that if he posts it, its probably true.

It would be interesting to have a player transfer in for only his Sr season. There are many pros and cons, but fact is, they guy was 3rd Team All-Big Ten last year. And Bradley has a pretty good track record this decade with transfers from Iowa (Sommerville).

This is the first I have heard of an interest in Bradley by Freeman. Thanks for posting PTown.
I would have to believe he would not come here without a scholarship.

Maybe if a scholarship becomes available, he could be a possibility.

I don't see it happening - Bradley doesn't have a scholarship to give him for his redshirt season, unless someone unexpectedly leaves. He'd have to pay his own way for a year, then he could use one of the five scholarship openings for 2009-10. Maybe that's no big deal to him, but I'd think he'd go somewhere that has a scholarship open for the next two seasons.

I cannot see many teams giving a scholarship to a player for 1 season unless he is an nba lottery pick type of player.

I'm fairly sure that article is referencing UIC, not UIUC. It seems like the headline writer screwed up because of the weird wording used in the article.

Illinois will have a ton of good guards in 2009-10, when Freeman would be eligible to play:

SG Jamar Smith Sr.
PG Demetri McCamey Jr.
SG Alex Legion Jr.
PG Jeff Jordan Jr.
SG D.J. Richardson Fr.
SG Brandon Paul Fr.
PG Joseph Bertrand Fr.

Honestly, Freeman probably wouldn't even start at Illinois in 2009-10, and he'd just take away playing time from one of the talented freshmen. Futhermore, Illinois has no open scholarships for that season. The only way he'd come to Illinois is as a walk-on, and I don't see that happening. Just doesn't make sense for either side.

I wouldn't be shocked if Freeman landed at Iowa State. In the past 4 years, 2 other players have transferred from one school to the other. Adam Haluska transferred to Iowa from Iowa St. after a solid freshman season and led Iowa in scoring with over 20 points per game last year, which led to him being picked in the mid-2nd round of the NBA draft.

Alex Thompson did the opposite...after being buried on the Hawkeye bench for 2 seasons, he transferred to Iowa St. He's played more minutes last year with Iowa St, but his production hasn't really increased. He'll likely be penciled in as a starter at this point.

Due to the poor performances of both schools over the past few seasons, the rivalry has really quieted down. If Tony were to enroll at Iowa St that would hopefully be a spark to get things going again with the rivalry.

He'll only have one year of eligibility but many down south love this move for a couple reasons. One is that he'll be able to practice with the team this year and help the stable of young guards SIU has coming in to get ready for D1 hoops. Also he'll provide some leadership and experience to the 2009 team when Mullins graduates.
