If it makes sense for Memphis to recruit D. Rose for 1 year, IU to recruit E. Gordan for 1 year, and USC to recruit OJ Mayo for 1 year ... then this also makes sense for the Salukis ... and perhaps is even better. Freeman will be a a Sr., not a freshman like the one-and-done's and he will have one year before he plays in real games to get to know his teammates. Nice move by SIU.

The long term effects of Gordon to IU for a year, Beasley to KSU for a year, Mayo to USC ofr a year, etc... is yet to be fully seen, but right now it appears many of the schools who have the one-and-dones will be paying a hefty price considering none of those schools really had any post season success.
And I am not even so sure Memphis might have been a Final Four team even without Rose.

I would agree with Tornado. Memphis would still likely have had the gaudy regular season record, but Rose was the player that put them head-and-shoulders above their opponents in this year's tournament. Without Rose, I don't think that it's unrealistic to think that they'd have fallen short as they did every other year without him. Just my 2 cents though.

Rose carried Memphis in many games, I don't think, actually, I KNOW they would be nowhere as good without him and certainly not national champions.

It seems odd to me that SIU is using two years worth of scholarships on a guy for one year when they have plenty of guards. If it was a proven big man, I could see it. They even have some highly regarded recruits that are going to have a year under their belt when Freeman is eligible.

It'll be interesting to see if Freeman fits into Lowery's slow paced offense since he didn't fit into Lickliter's slow paced offense.

Freeman is an outstanding defender, and will be a prototypical SIU lead guard. I think this move could make SIU a legitimate Final Four contender in 09-10.

I don't think that many people are understanding the magnitude of their recruiting class this year. That was a legitimate BCS recruiting class. I really like them on paper. Fortunately they don't play the games on paper. It is going to be really interesting to see how this group will play out.

Wow... way to step out there Garland. I like seeing someone put their thoughts out there like you just did. So SIU a serious contender for the Final4 in 09-10.... hmmmm... and with UIUC fans thinking they are gonna finally be taken back to the promised land about that time... could we see a matchup of UIUC and SIU in the Final4 - FINALLY?!?!

Does SIU lose to Bradley or the Stephen Curry's in the Final Four?

                      .
Wait a minute, even the SIU fans just aren't this optimistic...although they are pleased to have such athleticism...
Read what one of their big time fans/bloggers says about Freeman and the rest of their "stable" of guards.
(this guy had just watched several of the players practicing and working out....)

"After practice, Bocot would sometimes go shoot around by himself. I stuck around to watch him for a few minutes.....
A lefty, he made a few 3-pointers, a few pull-ups. (then he describes how Bocot spent the rest of his practice time trying circus dunks)...

....You put him with Ryan Hare, Torres Roundtree, Bryan Mullins and Kevin Dillard, ....... No straight shooters in the group

Tony Freeman, who was dissed by Hawkeye coach Todd Lickliter
verbally committed to SIU’s men’s basketball team late Sunday night. Freeman made his official visit to SIU this past weekend.

The 6-foot-1 guard will likely have to sit out a year via NCAA regulations
                      ..."

OK....so he made a FEW 3-pointers when shooting all by himself in the gym, and a FEW pull-ups? Most college shooters when all alone and unguarded in a gym can hit 90% of shots.
And the guy admits (as many others have) that there really are no true "shooters" among all their guards.

Then what's with the comments about Tony Freeman "WILL LIKELY" have to sit out a year.
Does this guy have some hope, Freeman can petition the NCAA and NOT have to sit out a year?
