    here is an interesting anecdote......

from a story about Johnny Orr speaking at Ames (IA) High School...
In his speech, Orr says that he was the #1 draft pick in the NBA...
The actual amount he signed for is a surprising story in itself.....only $1000 signing bonus and $6K/yr.,
BUT......poor old Johnny is getting a little forgetful..........

"I (was) the No. 1 draft choice in the NBA one year and I signed with St. Louis,
the St. Louis Bombers," Orr said. "I was just a kid and didn't know anything. My
contract was worth $6,000 a year. And for being the No. 1 signer I got $1,000.
And I thought that was awesome."

    Here are the facts......
In 1949, Johnny Orr was actually the 20th player selected in the 1949 NBA Draft.
He was St. Louis' 2nd pick, near the end of the 2nd round....
Pick Team Player College 1. Providence Steam Rollers Howie Shannon Kansas State University 2. Indianapolis Olympians Alex Groza University of Kentucky 3. Fort Wayne Pistons Bob Harris Oklahoma State University 4. Boston Celtics Tony Lavelli Yale University 5T. St. Louis Bombers Ed Macauley Saint Louis University 6. Philadelphia Warriors Vern Gardner University of Utah 7. Baltimore Bullets Ron Livingstone University of Wyoming 8. New York Knickerbockers Dick McGuire St. John's University 9. Washi

He was actually selected late in the draft in 1948 also, by Minnesota, but he did not leave college
(Beloit College, where he played along side Morton's Ron Bontemps' who went on to play for the
1952 US Olympic Team and win a Gold Medal), so he did not sign in 1948.
Pick Team Player College 1. Providence Steam Rollers Andy Tonkovich Marshall University 2. Indianapolis Jets George Kok University of Arkansas 3. Boston Celtics George Hauptfuhrer Harvard University 4. New York Knickerbockers Dolph Schayes New York University 5. Chicago Stags Ed Mikan DePaul University 6. Baltimore Bullets Walt Budko Columbia University 7. St. Louis Bombers Robert Gale Cornell University 8. Fort Wayne Pistons Ward Williams Indiana University 9. Minneapolis Lakers Chuck Hanger Un

Bradley's Paul Unruh was drafted #21 in 1950

      I'd take Rose...

The type of player he is doesn't happen just anywhere or even every year for that matter...their hasn't been a game changing PG in the draft for a little while...since Chris Paul I would say...

If they needed to fill the PF position, they could probably grab someone decent at the 2nd round opening, but I think if the pick stays w/ Miami, they can build a run-n-gun team around D-Wade and D-Rose in their backcourt.

If the Sonics, Clippers, Portland or maybe the Knicks get the number one I think they go with Rose.

Everyone else who is lotto eligible will go with Beasley.

If somehow Chicago got the number one, they should go Rose but I bet they would go Beasley.

The NBA is a guard oriented league especially without any hand checking, as we see with Paul, Nash, Parker having no problems getting to the basket because of the lack of defenders being able to control the dribbler. Rose is the better of the two purely in having an effect on the game nightly. Of course the abililty to palm/carry the ball also helps a ton on getting to the rim.

It appears Derrick Rose doesn't want to play for the Bulls and would rather go to Miami.

            Whoa....

Everything is in the air.... but wow.

            -- Beasley to the Bulls?
-- "Southern Cal guard O.J. Mayo said he could see himself landing with the Heat."
-- "Stanford center Brook Lopez said he has workouts scheduled with the Timberwolves, who pick at No. 3, and the Sonics, who pick at No. 4, but nothing yet with the Heat."

So Rose could be No. 3 or 4?

Your statement that attempts to summarize this article isnt close to being accurate. Nowhere in this article does it even come anywhere near saying something about Rose "not wanting to play for the Bulls"..."and preferring to play for the Heat".
I really am confused how you arrived at those conclusions after reading the article.

If Rose wants to play for the team that has the 1st pick, he'd have to get picked first.
Why would he say publicly that he thinks Beasley is better unless he wanted to encourage the Bulls to pass on him?
I would dare say he DOES have a preference, since he knows a lot about both teams and their players, just maybe he'd rather play somewhere other than Chicago?

Or maybe he really thinkgs Beasley is better and knows that John Paxon and Pat Riley dont care what he thinks thier going to take who they think is best.

Just your typical misleading post to fool those who dont read the link.
                  Can we start winning soon?

Hmmmmm. Let's see. If I was 20 years old with millions of dollars would I rather play/live in Chicago (where my friends, family, and "hangers-on" will be up my @$$, and the winters are butt-cold), or would I rather be in warm, sunny Miami with South Beach and beautiful girls?

                    You decide

I don't know how anybody could pass on Beasley. BUT I'm not convinced that he's not just going to continue being a guy that puts up ridiculous stats on an average team. I can't shake the thought that he'll spend his career being a regular season superstar, but a guy that struggles against the better NBA 4's with length in the playoffs (like Barkley).

It seems like Rose could end up being a cross between Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade....and I think Rose creates more of a matchup problem for opposing NBA PG's than Beasley creates for opposing NBA PF's.

That said, Beasley is the better player and the safer pick. I don't see Paxson passing on him.

                        Did anyone find this odd??

In that same article above where Derrick Rose said Beasley is better,
further down, OJ Mayo is quoted...
"Southern Cal guard O.J. Mayo said he could see himself landing with the Heat."

Now, mind you,, the Heat have the #2 NBA Draft pick overall!

"Southern Cal guard O.J. Mayo said he could see himself landing with the Heat. He has been working out in Chicago alongside Heat guard Dwyane Wade, with the two eating lunch together Wednesday in Chicago.
"It's great for me to be able to pick his mind a little bit, ask him questions about his early years in the NBA," Mayo said. "He's a great person. He's totally a great guy and I'd love to play with him."

So I wonder how many people really think OJ Mayo could be picked with the #2 pick. I think Mayo will fall quite a bit further, as teams might actually begin to wonder just what they might be getting themselves into if they draft this guy.
Troublesome headlines have folllewed OJ Mayo at every school he's been at since elementary school.
There have been reports of fights, expulsions, altercations with refs, ejections, suspensions, and even the possibility that his later actions such as the revelations that he's maybe been taking good for years could result in his prior schools even losing some of their titles. Now all this with the spectre that OJ may be spending some time in court in the near future.
So Miami is going to draft this guy and take a pass on either Beasley or Rose?
Just what are these people smoking who believe this?

just a few past headlines on OJ...and this is just within the past yearm or so, it doesn't include all the altercations back in Cincy.

O.J. Mayo, one of the most acclaimed high school players in the nation, was banned from Cincinnati North College Hill's state semifinal game Thursday by the school's principal.

                        and a couple good ones
