  • NBA #1 draft pick

The NBA Mock Draft sites I posted yesterday show a split of who people thnk will be the #1 overall NBA draft pick. 5 sites say Michael Beasley, 4 sites say Derrick Rose, and 1 site says O.J. Mayo (that site hasn't been updated since Aug., 2007).

But I wondered who the Bradley fans here think will be #1. I can't see any team passing up Beasley, even for Rose. Most likely, the #1 team drafting will be the Miami Heat. Rose has the potential to be a great point guard, but remember, he played on the Memphis team that many believe had the best overall talent of any team in the NCAA. Yet, Rose only averaged 4.7 assists per game, which ranked only 5th in the Conference USA. He is not a great shooter. He averaged 14.9 points a game (10th in his conference), but shot only 33.7% from three (he did not rank in the top 50 in CUSA).
Rose was also inconsistent, and had quite a few "off games". See his stats below, but he scored in single digits 11 times, including 8 games with 6 points or less. He had 3 or less assists in 14 of his games, and even had a couple games with zero assists. He was also near the top of CUSA in turnovers.

Michael Beasley actually made more 3 pointers and shot a better percentage than Rose (37.9% to 33.7%). But his consistency was what is amazing. It is rare to find a power inside player with the scoring and rebounding ability of Beasley. Despite being double and triple teamed almost every game (by contrast, Derrick rose was almost never double-teamed), Beasley only twice had less than 9 rebounds, and scored in double figures in every game but one. He averaged 12.4 rebounds and 26.2 points per game despite the double teaming. His shooting percentages, including free throw percentage, was better than Rose. And, I think he played against better competetion over the season, and he played on a Kansas State team that ws not nearly as talented as Memphis. So if I was picking, I wouldn't hesitate to pick Beasley over Rose.
    What do you think?

If Miami gets the 1st pick, I think they take Rose. They've got Shawn Marion and Udonis Haslem already at positions I think Beasley could fill. So, unless they plan on re-signing Marion, I don't know why they would take Beasley.

I like Rose but would take Beasley without a doubt with the first pick.

I think Rose built up a lot of extra hype based on Memphis going deeper into the tourney. Prior to the tourney, Beasley seemed to pretty much be the consensus number 1, but I think K-State's early exit allowed Rose to be fresher on people's minds.

I don??™t think they can go wrong with either pick but I would take Rose. He will come into the NBA as one of the most athletic point guards in the league from day one. IMO point guard is the most important position on the floor. I also think he has a higher ceiling then Beasley. The Heat already have Wade but they also already have Marion who is similar to Beasley.

Here are the junior year college stats of another 6'3 strong guard drafted a few years back.

          43% fg
          36% 3pt fg%
          67% free throw %
          109 turnovers (2.7 per game)
          264 assists (6.7 per game)
          2.4 to 1 A/T ratio
          12.5 points per game

Deron Williams turned out pretty good for the Jazz
          Can we start winning soon?

I would take Beasley. I don't think having Haslem would prevent Miami from going after Beasley. Beasley at the 4, Marion at the 3, Wade at the 2. That would be a pretty good lineup. All they would need to do is find a center and a pg that could shoot well, and the pg shouldn't be too hard to find.

I would take Beasley cause he played for a BCS school.

And Rose was the best player on the most talented team in the country. I don't care about stats, he was the best player.

That being said, whoever has the top 2 picks will get two very good players. I don't think they can go wrong whichever direction they go.

Adam Emmenecker was the best player on the best team in the MVC. That doesn't mean he is the best player in the conference.
I again don't mean this as a slight to Rose, but I see a little overhyping with him and I am not sure he is a certain All-Pro, but I see nothing but performance from Beasley and think he will be Kevin Garnett with better offensive skills.

That question can't be answered until after knowing who has the #1 pick and what their needs would be. If I had the #1 pick and needed a point guard then it would have to be Rose, if I needed a forward it would have to Beasley but if my real need was the big guy then I would have to decide on which one to go w/. It would be tough to pass up either one of these guys but what good does it do to p/u a player that isn't going to fit into what you want to do. To many teams take the best player available but that player isn't always going to be the one that is going to help in the long run or never really develops like they think he will. (go back 10 years and take all of the lottery picks during that time and see how many have become all-stars_
Saying all of that I would stil have to go w/ Beasly if I needed needed a forward or shooting guard as I think he could handle either position.

I think Beasley is the "safer" pick at this point, but Rose has a higher ceiling. I think I might go with Rose because of that, but it's easy for me to say that considering I'm not the one getting paid to make such decisions.

I'm guessing they'll take Rose. You don't get too many chances to pick a PG that can lead your team for 10+ years. I like his height and physicality for the NBA game. I think Miami can either trade for a quality Forward or wait until next year's draft.

All great teams need a great leader to run the offense and Rose offers that opportunity.

I absolutely love the MVC, but isn't there a difference between the talent level of Drake (and the MVC) and Memphis? How many top recruits do they continually get?

Also, I'll take that bet that Beasley won't be as good a player as KG. Beasley will be very good for a long time. KG is a Hall-of-Famer.

Beasley is easily the most NBA ready player in the draft and SHOULD be the #1 pick. Picking for a need instead of the best player available at the top of the draft hasn't worked too well in the past (Portland picked Bowie over MJ to fill a need-how would MJ with Drexler look in the backcourt!). The Spurs really didn't need another center when they took Duncan and that's worked out OK for them. The best point guard in that draft (1997) was Billups. A lot of players would have been better fits, but Duncan was the best individual player in the draft. Same thing happened when Detroit took Darko over Mello and Wade because "they already had T. Prince."

Beasley was a much more dominant individual force (and his team beat Kansas) in college basketball this season. He probably won't be taking a pay cut to go to the NBA either.

Also Marion is not expected to be re-signed by Miami so both players should be a good fit on Miami. Rose may be a better fit on Seatle or Minn IMO. Jefferson and Beasley would be a nasty front line on Minn though and Beasley with Durant could work really well too.

Teams in the NBA have won without dominat PGs in the past. The Bulls never had a dominant PG, the lakers nor Miami (although Wade basically plays PG). Boston doesn't have a good PG this season, and they've done well. ATL being tied in the series has more to do with athleticism and Boston being old than a lack of a PG.

I'd take Beasley. He is a bigger, better version of Charles Barkley!
