The NBA Mock Draft sites I posted yesterday show a split of who people thnk will be the #1 overall NBA draft pick. 5 sites say Michael Beasley, 4 sites say Derrick Rose, and 1 site says O.J. Mayo (that site hasn't been updated since Aug., 2007).
But I wondered who the Bradley fans here think will be #1. I can't see any team passing up Beasley, even for Rose. Most likely, the #1 team drafting will be the Miami Heat. Rose has the potential to be a great point guard, but remember, he played on the Memphis team that many believe had the best overall talent of any team in the NCAA. Yet, Rose only averaged 4.7 assists per game, which ranked only 5th in the Conference USA. He is not a great shooter. He averaged 14.9 points a game (10th in his conference), but shot only 33.7% from three (he did not rank in the top 50 in CUSA).
Rose was also inconsistent, and had quite a few "off games". See his stats below, but he scored in single digits 11 times, including 8 games with 6 points or less. He had 3 or less assists in 14 of his games, and even had a couple games with zero assists. He was also near the top of CUSA in turnovers.
Michael Beasley actually made more 3 pointers and shot a better percentage than Rose (37.9% to 33.7%). But his consistency was what is amazing. It is rare to find a power inside player with the scoring and rebounding ability of Beasley. Despite being double and triple teamed almost every game (by contrast, Derrick rose was almost never double-teamed), Beasley only twice had less than 9 rebounds, and scored in double figures in every game but one. He averaged 12.4 rebounds and 26.2 points per game despite the double teaming. His shooting percentages, including free throw percentage, was better than Rose. And, I think he played against better competetion over the season, and he played on a Kansas State team that ws not nearly as talented as Memphis. So if I was picking, I wouldn't hesitate to pick Beasley over Rose.
