  • Lucky to Be alive?

A Marshall University basketball player, Tay Spann, was in a car accident,
    and here's the report...
"automobile accident in which a Mack dump truck had slammed into a Mercedes luxury car." (it was a 1992 Mercedes )

"Spann was driving to campus for a workout when the accident occurred about 2 p.m.
in Huntington's East End, the newspaper reported. Spann's car was hit by a dump truck.

"He was banged up bad," Jones said today in an interview with the Daily Mail. "He is on crutches
because of the soreness in his hip. He is very fortunate to be able to walk away from that
(accident), at the end of the day. The dump truck just drilled his door."

Tay Spann is a 4-Star recruit who transferred to Marshall after getting recruited initialy to Georgetown.
He has some relatively minor injuries and will be out a few weeks, but is not nearly as badly hurt as that photo might have caused one to expect.

Just from a quick look at the picture, I would say he is VERY lucky to be alive. I have ran two other car accidents that were similar in circumstances as this (One involving a semi cab, and the other a garbage truck) and both ended up being fatal as the driver was pinned by the intruding drivers door. Looks like someone was looking after him, and the best of wishes towards a speedy recovery.

He is also lucky he was driving a Mercedes full sized sedan. They are one of the most secure vehicles made in terms of collision protection for the driver. If he had been driving a cheaper car, he probably wouldn't have been as lucky.

Just out of curiosity, I checked on that model of Mercedes....
It is a highly desirable model and has maintained value tremendously.
Even the ones you can find with the highest mileage sell for at least $4000-$5000,
and lower mileage ones appear to sell quickly at $9000-$15,000

It is a car that has a very high owner satisfaction rating, so I'll bet even beyond his injuries,
he is sad about his car but happy it protected him!

Just a thought...would you rather have your wife and kids riding in a car like this or in one of the compact hybrids you now see on the road.

I will pay a couple extra bucks each month for the additional gas.
