  • Highly rated 2-guard commits to Indiana

Nick Williams, a highly rated shooting guard from Mobile, Alabama, has just committed to Tom Crean and Indiana. He is a class of 2008 recruit.
Williams had verbally committed to Marquette, but did not sign a LOI after Crean left Marquette and now is committing to Indiana.
This makes the 2nd 2008 shooting guard to commit to Indiana this week. Devin Dumes, one of the highest rated juco 2-guards in the country just committed a couple days ago. And expect Tom Crean to continue to recruit more players to fill Indiana's depleted roster.

This is relevant because one of Indiana's other recruits is Matt Roth, who plays the same position as these other recruits.

IU will have so many of the Crean-type 2-guards (D-Wade types) that MR will be waiting his turn.

Even among the potentially returning players (Jordan Crawford, and possibly Jamarcus Ellis & Armon Bassett) they are largely the 2-guards.
They will still need help at PG.

After the recent committment of these shooting guards, and the possibility that Tom Crean is recruiting a couple more, there is now chatter on the IU boards that MR may be better to redhsirt, or may actually "have second thoughts with such a crowded backcourt", and that MR may not be capable of making much of an impact at the Big Ten level until he is a junior or a senior.
And....here is one quote from a thread..."Roth will be a role player"

      and
"with Williams, Ellis, Bassett, Dumes, and Crawford all ahead of Roth on the depth chart the possibility.... Roth is a Redshirt candidate..."
"If Bassett and Ellis return Roth is the odd man out mins wise. He is either R.S. or a speciality player who may see 15 mins one night and 2 the next."

but one guy has a little sense...
"Let's not start we have too much talent and it'll turn off some recruits ...
We're not close to having a roster full of great basketball players."

I think there are more metrics than just "playing time minutes" for some players when deciding what school to go to. We know that there are some schools that kids have a special affection for through family connections, etc ...

MR's position at IU is not much different than the glut of guards that BU has on their team. If MR want to get his degree from IU which has outstanding academics and if he wants to be part of a program that has a long, successful tradition in college sports, especially basketball and if he want to play for a great coach in Tom Crean, then I think there is more to a player wanting to be at IU than just minutes played.

If "minutes played' is such an overwhelming concern, then maybe he should go to Chicago State where he can be sure of playing 40 minutes a game. Stretch and challenge yourself. To do so, you'll have to compete for every inch ... why would you want to have it any other way?

With Roth never being on Tom Crean's radar at MU, I find it hard to believe that he is at IU. With scholarships being filled left and right, MR's options are surprisingly slim at this point. BU certainly isn't one anymore.

If he were to get his release

SIU might be a possible destination. 2, maybe 3 of their commitments look like they will have serious Clearinghouse issues. I don't think it's likely at all that all will qualify, and I'd actually be surprised if only one failed to. From what I've heard, Ryan Hare isn't on track to qualify.

I alwyas thought MS would benefit from a RS WHEREVER he choose to go....BU, IU as his final two choices.

Not a knock he just appears to be the type that could really use a year of strengthening and then get 4 good years.

              Good luck to MR......
