  • Gary Williams is getting desperate

Tyree Evans has committed to Maryland.
Stay up to date with all the college basketball recruiting news and more at 247Sports.com

He is one of the top juco players in the country. He averaged 23 points per game at Motlow State College in Tennessee. However, he had almost no interest from college coaches, and Maryland may have been one of the few in addition to Kansas State and Florida State that offered.

But what may on the surface appear to be a good recruiting move by Gary Williams, instead is really a move of desperation.

Tyree Evans was one of the top 2 or 3 high school players in 2004 when he came out of high school in Virginia. He accepted a scholarship offer from Bob Huggins at Cincinnati, but his grades were poor and he was forced to go to Winchendon prep school. While there he was charged with rape. He eventually plead guilty to a lesser charge of assault, and later had other issues with the law, and was kicked off his prep school team. By then Bob Huggins had moved on to Kansas State. He enrolled at a Kansas juco (Butler County) with hopes of still getting into K-State. He got into more trouble and was kicked off his juco team. He transferred to Motlow CC in Tennessee, and put up some good numbers this season. And now Gary Williams is ready to forgive and forget.

As a senior at George Wythe High in Richmond, Va., Tyree Evans scored 884 points, a season total exceeded in the state by only Allen Iverson and Moses Malone. He scorched Wythe's rival, L.C. Bird, for 51 points.

How sad is that! I heard the rumor and your right he is getting desperate. GW is probably to old school to recruit today's kid!

Maryland's situation (and the Illini's) noted in ESPN article:
For some programs, recent Final Four was the last shining moment

The Final Four is the ultimate high for many teams. But some big-name programs have been disappointments since their One Shining Moment, writes Mark Schlabach.

Well, whatever "sliver" of creditibility this guy has left (which wasn't much) is now completely down the toilet!

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!

Uh, oh.....this one has BLOWN UP right in Maryland coach Gary Williams' face!!

Suddenly, Tyree Evans is apparently no longer welcome at Maryland or as some have suspected, the Maryland administration has gone OVER GARY WILLIAMS' HEAD and revoked the scholarship so that Tyree Evans won't be a Terrapin.
One article even notes, this all seemed to unravel when the press dug up even more past drug arrests and issues on the kid and published them.

Here for your enjoyment is a funny sign aimed at the low graduation rates
(actually the zero graduation rates) at Maryland:

Addendum...........very interesting revelations from the Maryland message board!!!

I checked some of the message boards for Maryland and there is a quite a debate over just who is more inept...
Some think it's Gary Williams who can't recruit good players and lately is going desperately after some very troubled recruits like Bobby Maze and Tyree Evans,
or some of the debate says Athletic Director Debbie Yow is totally inept in doing what she's doing and barring Evans from admission even after he's signed a LETTER OF INTENT.

BUT---- here's part of the debate.....
while AD Debbie Yow has barred Tyree Evans for his past drug issues,
she has admitted herself that she has used "LSD, marijuana, and "maybe" cocaine"

"Are we seriously becoming the new laughing stock of the ACC?"

"On a scale from 1 to 10, how terrible is Dr. Yow" and worse..

It will be interesting to see what school goes after Tyree Evans. Tennessee scooped up the last Gary Williams misfit that didn't qualify at Maryland (Bobby Maze), now Tyree Evans is released and told to look elsewhere.

Here is a story that says even though they knew Tyree Evans could NOT qualify academically at Maryland, that those with the pull were willing to pull some might special strings to get the kid a rare, special exemption generally reserved for "exceptional cases" of need, disadvantaged applicants, and special benefits required.
                    In other words, basketball rules.

Gary Williams says expand the NCAA Tournament...
but read between the lines...he also says...
"that??™s ridiculous. You don??™t want to put everybody in. Like Indiana high school basketball used to have the best high school state tournament in the country because everybody played.

                            then the questioner says....
MW: Now they??™re going to divisions.

                            then Gary --
"You know, now there??™s an argument for that..."
then he goes on and talks Big Ten, ACC, etc...

it is obvious what he's driving at...
he wants to expand the NCAA Tourney all right, but only include the big boys, and relegate the non-BCS teams to some other tourney...get 'em out of the NCAA's

when one of the questioners repeats the suggestion that every team should be in...Gary seems to get a little miffed...
"No, you??™re wrong. You should have, you know, it??™s subjective, who gets in now, obviously. And so, you know, if there??™s room for, say, 16 more teams, great. If it??™s eight more teams, great. Whatever the deal is."

ahh....so it's "subjective".....that's the key word he uses....subjective enough to eliminate the RPI and wins and losses....
                            just let him decide, right??
Yeah....isn't he the guy who already is on record saying the 6th and 7th best teams in the ACC are better than the top teams in the Valley...
so now you get the picture....

The late Mark McGwire at Marquette also said something to that effect.
