I just ran across some talk on boards about DePaul and their coaching search....and it centers apparently on the fact that some of the candidates being wooed are asking hard about DePaul's long term committment to the Big East...
apparently there is indeed a little bit of rumble behind the scenes that we are not hearing much about, and it involves perhaps BOTH DePaul and Saint Louis leaving the conferences they are presently in, and trying to form a new conference or get into some other conference....and guess what name comes up the most...
the MVC............
schools with stroing basketball programs and no football (Marquette, DePaul, SLU, Creighton, and even Bradley...) seem to get the most mention in regards to some new conference...
but I still just don't see it happening any time soon.......
Kinda surpurised to hear this. I can remember "the other mike" when we played depaul the year before they went into the big east and how happy they were to get into that conf. and get in the east coast recruiting markets. Apparently they have not been successful with their recruiting efforts and coach selection. Who besides lowery are they wooing for the coaching job?
It's easy for the Pac10 but it'll be a tall order for
the Big East especially if the Big Ten steals a team.
Big East then may go after BC again! I heard that as a rumor anyway. What would happen to Villanova and Georgetown which do have a football teams just not D-I? I'd be surprised if the Big East would want to cut St. John's out of the picture. An only football conference for the Big East is very unlikely. Cutting some teams for teams with football programs though may happen and the two most likely would be DePaul and Marquette.

No kidding. Check out what the theoretical Big East would look like:
Big East South: South Florida, Central Florida, Memphis, UAB, Rutgers, Louisville
Big East North: Connecticut, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Massachusetts
Point is, though, they could get there if they absolutely must.

It's unlikely Villanova or G'town have the financial capability to meet D-1 standards in football.
Big East could go in a few ways; going to 12 for football and cutting a deal with the 8 non-football members seems likeliest.
If they're a non scholarship program I'll grant it could take
them a while to build a program but I have to think money would be the least of their
concerns.
Has a presence in several good markets and I think would command at least 3 or 4 NCAA bids each season.
Bradley
Butler
Creighton
Dayton
DePaul
Detroit
Drake
Marquette
St. Louis
Xavier
I think this group of schools would also create a lot of synergy for establishing a premier academic league of private, mid-western schools. The name Ivy league is taken, maybe it could be the "Corn Tassel League."

I don"t see BU leaving the Valley to join teams that continue to jump around from new league to new league, I could see the Valley expanding to 2 divisions .
If we had an opportunity to join a league with creighton, wsu, butler, xavier, Dayton, SLU, depaul and Marquette I hope we'd jump at the chance without reservation.
Remember, such a jump would be necessary if the NCAA Division 1 as is splits into an upper tier and lower tier, with the "BCS" schools breaking away from the NCAA. Bradley (and other MVC teams) would then join basketball-only schools making the jump with the power 6 conferences.

Without a doubt! Continuing with the status quo in this situation would be a bad deal for us. A super mid-west non-football league would be killer and if they can brand it with some academic impact and cooperation the sky is the limit to the potential revenue and quality of student it would attract. Do not kid yourself if this becomes a reality that the Administration would not jump at it.

Plus the recruiting... I think Iman Shumpert would be a Brave had we been in this conference three years ago. That or a Marquette Golden Eagle since they were the other final three school he had listed, if I recall.
