  • Rick Majerus Wants Out of A-10 and In MVC

In an interview here's what Rick Majerus said...

"SLU Coach Rick Majerus, during an interview ...
"You can't find a fan to name all 14 teams in the A10."

Asked ...if the MVC was "a realistic consideration," Majerus said...
"he and Father Biondi, SLU President, will have to "sit down and discuss that.""

Majerus referred to the geographics of the A-10 and said:
"Every recruit we've lost has been because of the league we are in."
"It's going to be a tough year again next year."

...and these aren't things he knew BEFORE he took the job???

If he had these concerns/problems/issues, he should've gotten them out right away.

I like our league just the way it it.

SLU has felt like they are above the Valley for years, but guess what they're not. The last thing we need is the Rick Majerus soap opera rocking our ship.

Hasnt Doug Elgin been on the record the conference is not looking to expand. Also, if SLU were to enter into the Valley either one team would have to go or another probably would have to be added.

They would be though an excellent fit for the conference, even if they play in the same city the tourney is held in.

I love the current round-robin schedule, but I am up for adding a couple of high-profile mids in big markets in SLU and Butler, and making the MVC the premier non-BCS league in the nation. I know some are against it, but this would take the MVC to a new level nationally IMO. Plus, it would make for some easy, fun road trips and some new local rivals. Honestly, I don't see much of a downside to it.

I do believe there could be a downside, and it is why there will be several current MVC schools who will be opposed to St. Louis joining.

One obvious issue is St. Louis having a home-town, and a sort of home court advantage every year in the tournament.

I expect St. Louis will want to be a primary policy-maker in the MVC from day 1, something that would otherwise never be the case with a new school joining a conference. And by virtue of "stepping down" from what they might think is a larger conference, they might think they deserve to have a greater control over the league.

And speaking of primadona's-- I think coexisting in a league with Rick Majerus might be the biggest downside of all.

When the Big 8 and Southwest merged it seemed Texas got everything they wanted. Admission standards, conference division pairings, football title or not game and where, etc...Now the big 12 league office is in their back yard.

I thought it odd that , Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado let it happen.

If people at St. Lou. U. think that the A-10 is better than the MVC let 'em think it but, then don't come a knocking on the Valley door asking if you can come in.

I'm not for league expansion but I would be up for an even trade with the Horizon. We will take back our Butler and you can have back your Evansville.

By his own admission that he'd like to get out of the A-10 and that nobody even
knows who the teams are, he sounds like he thinks the MVC may be a superior league.

Not only that but can you imagine how cut-throat and competitive recruiting would become? -- ISU, BU, SIU, SLU, MSU, Drake (have I missed anyone close?). Come to think of it that might not be such a bad thing. Think of the great rivalries it'll create..............kind of like Tobacco Road with NC, NCSU, Duke and Wake. Majerus could be "that guy" that everyone loves to hate.............Kinda like Coach K

It seems like SLU is a pretty good fit for the Valley. No football. They are building a new basketball facility for basketball. Geography. Majerus seems to have a good recruiting class coming in.

I think there are some drawbacks, but the Valley could use another team that is committed to thier basketball program. I think the one tournament bid and a far from sellout Valley tournament makes me think that the Valley could use some help. The Valley still has a hard time getting on the ESPN family of networks (or at least Fox Sports Midwest) and maybe SLU could help.

While we're at it, why not DePaul? The only reason they're in the Big East is the Chicago media market. No football, and they've shown that they're having quite a rough go of it with the powerhouses that are in the Big East, a "step down" to the MVC might give them a chance to rebuild. Of course, as long as they continue to miss out on all the Chicago recruits, it might not happen anyways.

I gotta disagree here DC. Back when SLU was in C-USA, their conference tourney was also held at the Scottrade Center, and I don't recall SLU having much of a home court advantage then. Also, I don't think that SLU would have any more fans or a home court advantage than Missouri St did in their heyday or that SIU has now. With SLU moving into a new on-campus arena next year, they won't even have the advantage of playing their home games in that gym.

As far as being a primary 'policy-maker', I just don't see that happening either. They may want to try to do that, but I don't think longstanding, nationally-recognized schools like Creighton or even BU for that matter would let something like that happen. The MVC is in the position of power here, and doesn't 'need' SLU for anything, which is why I don't think they'd just cede power to a new school regardless of who they are.

I don't really get the beef with Rick Majerus coming into the league. Like him or not, the guy is a marquee-name coach. He's coached in a national championship game. I see it as nothing but adding to the fine list of coaches in the league. The more good programs and more great coaches, the better. How would a guy like Majerus do anything but give the league even more national credibility? Isn't that what we want?

Is there a reason we'd have to go to 12 just to accept 11? The only problem I could see is seeding for the end of season tournament... You could still keep a balanced schedule with 11 teams, but 12 makes that impossible I think.

In my opinion, SLU has never helped any conference they've joined. Having said that, the MVC should give them serious consideration should they ask formally to join.
