cost of being in the final 4

Maybe someone can check this out but yesterday afternoon on ESPN they were talking about the cost of playing in the Final 4. They said that most schools loose money when they make it to the Final 4 because of all the cost that go w/ it. Each school is required to throw a party w/a min of $30 or 300,000 being spent. (can't remeber which but was thinking it was the larger amount) Then they mentioned that each school has to purchase so many tickets and pay for them even of not used. I didn't get the number of tickets they have to buy but it sounded like a significant numer. The main thing said is this is not like the Bowl games where each participant is guaranteed millions of dollars. They insinuated on the show that many of the final 4 teams have lost money because of this. Did anyone else hear this and can someone verify this. If this is the case maybe $60,000 to host a CBI game isn't so bad.

Gosh....let's wait to see the BU Scout and find out how many students had their tuition money taken away to send those loonies to San Antonio for the final Four!

Cost to play in NIT

But that's not necessarily the case in the NIT, where the Gators landed this spring after nine straight NCAA berths - including the last two national titles.

In fact, the more the team won in the NIT, the more it cost the school.

Florida won its first two NIT games at home to advance to a third-round game at Arizona State last week. According to UF associate athletic director Greg McGarity, the trip to Tempe resulted in a deficit of $30,000.

Florida also figures to lose more than $100,000 for the trip to New York, where the Gators lost to Massachusetts in the semifinals Tuesday night.

McGarity explained that the NIT only paid for a travel group of 25, with a per diem of $185 per person.

The rooms at the hotel the team was staying at cost $310 per person.

Florida also made the decision to send 38 people to Arizona and about 100 to New York - including the cheerleaders and band. McGarity called the travel group to Arizona State "bare bones.''

The costs, however, will be absorbed in the University Athletic Association budget that projects to cover some extra costs during the school year.

I think their moderately successful football program can more than compensate for any losses the basketball program incurs.
