  • Tom Crean on IU's Academic Situation

    "Not Good" was his comment...

More of the legacy of Kelvin Sampson...as apparently several Hoosiers (some who weren't planning on being back next year) didn't bother to attend classes regularly...

"Before Tom Crean can begin rebuilding the IU basketball program, he first has to put out some fires.
The second semester is rapidly coming to a close, and indications are that the Hoosiers’ have some issues in need of addressing.
“I can’t elaborate, but it’s not good,” Crean said Monday. “We have a lot of work to do.”
"The NCAA will release its next Academic Progress Rating (APR) in May, and indications are that the men’s basketball program won’t fare very well.
...that could result in the loss of an additional scholarship (IU is already forfeiting one in 2008-09 due to its self-imposed sanctions)"

IU has many problems but I really think Crean will get it cleaned up in a hurry. He is a great hire for IU and will get them back to respectability very soon.

Another interview, in which Tom Crean speaks to the academic situation at Indiana...

"After less than a week on the job, Crean learned of his new team’s academic
situation and classified it as “not good.” The basketball team posted a 2.89
GPA in the first semester when half of the players were at 3.0 or above, but
it appears the second semester has been a completely different story."

With the suspensions, turmoil with the coach being fired, and players in their final semester on campus or planning to go for the draft,
it appears a whole bunch of the players simply weren't bothering to go to class the 2nd semester.
Now if Bassett and Ellis, the suspended/dismissed players, decide to leave school and not finish classes or finals,
then the academic numbers will be even more horrible.

In other words...Crean doesn't want to let the dismissed malcontents back on the team, but he might be forced to
in order to save his own skin or be faced with losing possibly two more scholarships.

"The reason is this – if a team’s APR is below the cut off of 925, then the
institution isn’t allowed to re-issue the scholarship of a departing ineligible
player for the following year. It’s the “contemporaneous penalty” portion of
the NCAA’s academic requirements, and it’s what recently cost the Kansas
football program a couple of scholarships in 2008."
