  • A Recruiting Violation??

Someone else linked to this story, but I will ask the obvious question....
what is wrong with this picture...

Chicago Tribune writer Bob Sakamoto says this in his column...

""I was talking to (SIU) coach Chris Lowery last week and
he said that Ryan Hare might be committing to SIU later in the month."

and then it goes on to say that Kevin Dillard was trying to contact Hare
"to tell him that I'd love to play with him, and that it would be very good for our recruiting class.
"If he becomes a Saluki, I know we'll complement each other very well and do some damage together.""

I realize that this may not be viewed as Chris Lowery publicly talking about recruits, but in all actuality,
    that's exactly what this is....
Lowery should be furious, and the NCAA should check into this, as all head coaches try like heck to be sure
their words about recruits don't get publicized and get printed in the paper, as
it may be viewed as a serious recruiting violation. How many times do we just see
"the school or the coach is unable to comment on recruits until they have signed their LOI's"

Here we have through an intermediary, the words of the coach talking about a potential recruit abd ending up in the newspaper....??

Not split Hare's but I think its ok for a coach to tell a player of his or a coach of his that a player may sign....its not public......

I think that Hare and Lowery should know better than to talk about that to a writer. Lowery for talking about other recruits with a recruit like that, and Hare using poor judgement as well.

Yeah...I've been in college for a while now and I'm pretty sure that awesomest is not a word. -Andrew E.

Does a blog count as a newspaper? I honestly don't know how the NCAA sees that kind of thing.

I don't think this is worthy of some kind of investigation. Lowery didn't publicly comment on the kid.

Previous cases of such violations have involved coaches talking on radio shows, and in front of boosters. So technically, I think this is a violation of the NCAA's rule.

It IS within the NCAA rules to publicly state who you are recruiting. But that's it, no more than that.

But this violates the precise "spirit of the law" which is to prevent big name coaches and recruits from going public with pleas for other big name recruits to join them at such and such a school.

If Tyler Hansbrough was quoted in the press as saying "Hey Matt Roth, we need you at UNC and we want your teammate Dyricus also, we'd be a killer team together with you guys..."

Then of course you can see how this would give a recruiting advantage to the team or coach who is doing it....
Next thing you know then all heck breaks loose with players and coaches using and manipulating the media to do their recruiting for them, and certain media fully willing to help and others to hinder the recruitment at various programs.

Right. But Lowery wasn't talking to Sakamato the writer. Ryan Hare was. Ryan Hare repeated what Lowery told him. The only person who quoted Lowery was Hare (I believe). I don't see how that is a violation. Lowery never went public with this information to try to lure anybody.

I agree...the kid quoted was Dillard who is obviously loyal to ISU and has signed there, so in effect he does appear to be speaking as an "agent" of SIU, thus I think NCAA would view this kind of thing negatively,
which is why I said Lowery is likely to be upset it happened and not responsible himself.

Sorry. I misinterpreted your point--and I got the darned wrong kid. I agree. Lowery shouldn't be help responsible at all. He probably wishes Dillard had kept quiet but thats about it.

                      NCAA Division 1 Manual

Before the signing of a prospective student-athlete to a National Letter of Intent or an institution's written offer of admission and/or financial aid, a member institution may comment publicly only to the extent of confirming its recruitment of the prospective student-athlete. The institution may not comment generally about the prospective student-athlete's ability or the contribution that the prospective student-athlete might make to the institution's team; further, the institution is precluded from commenting in any manner as to the likelihood of the prospective student-athlete's signing with that institution. Violations of this bylaw do not affect a prospective student-athlete's eligibility and are considered institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1. (Revised: 1/14/97)

This article about a talented 7th grader (the article is interesting in itself) lists a few things that sound like violations...

--they report that this 7th grader has been contacted by several college coaches, which is a violation....as no college can contact a kid this young by any means!!
"college coaches recently started getting in on the action. Four Big Ten schools and a Conference USA school already have contacted him."

--they also report that numerous Chicago High Schools are recruiting him, which is blatantly a violation of both CPL and IHSA rules!!
"Like most of the talented junior-high-age players at Spiece, Hamilton Jr. is going through a double-recruitment.
Chicago high school coaches have been after him for years"

-- sadly the kid is already surrounded by "the media and scouts in attendance" and "recruiting analysts".

Sadly...the kid already sounds like he's being manipulated by "mentors and handlers"
