Here is an interesting article focusing on some comments by Memphis' Chris Douglas-Roberts,
but also some other topics....
The point is that Douglas-Roberts was heavily recruited by numerous schools out of Detroit, especially Big Ten schools.
But he chose Memphis and is their best player, but the reason he chose Memphis is because he felt the regimented offenses in the Big Ten wouldn't have allowed him to play up to his potential.
So he went where the coach lets the kids play their game!!
No wonder coaches like Calipari get the best talent...they let the kids play and use their talent instead of suppressing it and forcing it into a plodding, or slow moving offense.
In time, as the number of really talented kids increases, schools like Memphis will stay on top and schools that force the kids into their system may have trouble landing the truly top talent.
ps---
Here's an ISU student paper writer who analyzes why the Mens Final Four gets such better ratings than the womens Final Four..
and then she ends by telling us (as if we are all totally uninformed and need her help to know what's good to watch) to watch the Womens Finals Tuesday.
Her overall assessment puts the blame on the media and the networks!!! (and believe it or not, on Candace Parker's shoulder injury and departure next year!!)
Never mind that no matter what network any of these games is on, MORE People will watch the men than the women...guaranteed!!
"The answer is easy: not anytime soon, unless the media wants to step up and make some changes. First, the men's tournament is broadcast on CBS, a top primetime network. The women's games are shown on ESPN, and while this is obviously a top station for sports coverage, it is still outdone by a basic cable channel like CBS. CBS has had a hold on the men's tournament for years, but maybe another top primetime station like NBC or ABC could pick up the women's tournament, because it still remains one notch below the men's while it stays with ESPN.
Also, for the past three years, the face of women's college hoops has been Candace Parker..."
My response is, had not the media given the womens game way more time and exposure than would be comparative for the number of tickets sold and attendances seen at womens college games, then nobody would really be watching at all.
So don't BLAME the media....they are just about the only thing holding the Womens Final Four up!!
Proof--- Mens regional finals attendance 32000, womens regional finals attendance average 6000, need I say more.
