  • Shang Ping leaves Nebraska

Shang Ping, who played at ICC in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, then transferred to Nebraska, has now decided to leave Nebraska and transfer to another school at the end of this semester. As a junior at Nebraska he played in 21 games, averaged 9.9 minutes per game, 3.0 ppg, and 1.4 rpg. But he only played a total of 32 minutes in 18 conference games.

The articles suggest Nebraska coach Doc Sadler met with Ping after the season ended and "encouraged" him to leave. He will likely transfer to DII.

According to this article, Shang Ping just had surgery on his ankle.--

Here are the words of Shang Ping's coach:
"... he wanted a little more playing time than I can give. We talked about it and agreed that it will be in his best interest to drop down to another level to find more minutes on the court”

definitely look slike he'd be aiming at D-II, but unfortunately it looks like SP wasted a whole season by listening to "advisors" who told him to go BCS!

    By the way....
Shang Ping's coach at Nebraska, Doc Sadler, has been rewarded for his "performance".
He has been given a substantial raise and contract extension. after just one year on the job! ($800K thru 2014)

But this kinda reminds me of when New Mexico's Ritchie McKay parlayed one marginal season into a nice raise and extension (but he ended up getting fired the very next year!).
Sadler's record in his one and only season at Nebraska was 20-13 but his conference record was 7-9.
Plus...note that his nonconference record of 13-4 was built against a non-conference schedule that was ranked as #311 in Division I!
Seriously, the guy played BY far, the worst non-con schedule in all of the Big 12, ACC, SEC, Big East, Big Ten, A-10, Missouri Valley, Conference USA, and Horizon Leagues COMBINED!!! and I can find only ONE BCS school that played a worse schedule.
PLUS-- they lost a lot down the stretch...losing 11 of their final 19 games, exited their tourney early, and got bounced right away in the NIT.

Sadler's record in his one and only season at Nebraska was 20-13 but his conference record was 7-9.
And he did it primarily with players he didn't recruit. 3 of their 5 starters were recruited by former coach Barry Collier, including leading scorer and rebounder Aleks Maric.

It remains to be seen if he can recruit the talent he needs to compete in the Big 12.

Here's another story this morning on Ping...

"Shang Ping is looking for new school!

Asian Big Man to transfer from Nebraska...

6-foot-9 Shang Ping is going to transfer from the University of Nebraska to get an opportunity to see more playing time...

Lincoln --- Nebraska Coach Doc Sadler announced Wednesday that junior forward Shang Ping has decided to transfer from Nebraska. He will complete his classes this semester while finding another college to attend.

“I appreciate what Shang has done for us as he has been a hard worker while he has been at Nebraska,” Sadler said. “But he wanted a little more playing time than I can give. We talked about it and agreed that it will be in his best interest to drop down to another level to find more minutes on the court while finishing his degree.”

Ping averaged 9.9 minutes in 21 games this season while posting 3.0 points and 1.4 rebounds per contest."
