  • Les mentioned on OnMilwaukee.com

Siena coach Fran McCaffrey and Bradley's head coach, Jim Les, have surfaced as candidates.

Chicagotribune.com's Skip Myslenski reports today that "word on the street is Marquette is looking at Siena coach Fran McCaffrey as a possible replacement for Crean." McCaffrey's team upset No. 4 seed Vanderbilt in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament this year.

Sources tell me that Bradley University coach and former NBA player, Jim Les, also is interested in the job. Les, a point guard standout in his playing days, took Bradley to the Sweet 16 in 2006. His brother, Gary, has strong ties to the state and Milwaukee-area.

WTMJ reports that the Marquette job is down to four candidates.

      Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

Be interesting to see how this goes. The three established head coaches all have been successful. And while I've been out of Wisconsin too long to know how integral Williams was to Crean's staff, he'd probably give them the best chance to keep the team and the recruits together.

Tony Bennett would have been a great hire if he'd wanted it. It'll be interesting to see if he is going to stay with WSU or if he's holding out for a different job (selfishly, hoping it's my #2 team Wisconsin). That family is basketball royalty in Wisconsin.

No way Bradley lets Les leave. He virtually revived Bradley Basketball the last few seasons. Only way he leaves is if Bradley doesn't get a chance to counter offer like what happened with Marquette/Indiana.

Here's an example of really great journalism.....

This guy says Dayton's Brian Gregory is going to Marquette, and then Dayton will hire VCU's Anthony Grant....
FWIW from Chick Ludwig in the Dayton Daily News Red-hot rumor: Gregory to Marquette; Grant to UD http://www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/s...on/chickludwig/

However, since the article was first posted by the Dayton Daily News, Dayton coach Brian Gregory made a big stink
and claimed to the contrary that he is NOT leaving Dayton. So the Dayton paper changes the story.
(read one of the comments at the bottom,
"Gregory is staying???? But I could have swore the greatest investigative reporter Chuck Ludwig said
he was as good as gone yesterday. You know in that blog he wrote, what happened to that?")

            so...what's the sportswriter do???
He changes his story and takes it off his column for the day.
Now the story that just yesterday and this morning said Gregory was leaving, is totally vanished.

If that's really what they are down to, I hope they go with Brownell. I like McKillop but would prefer someone younger, more up-and-coming. Williams might help them keep their recruits but can he coach? And the recruits may decide to go elsewhere anyhow. And I can't stand the thought of Lowery bringing his slowdown, clutch-and-hold style to MU.

IMO, only way Les leaves is if we adopt a Squirrel as a mascot.

Ha, ha....the writers at Rivals....are having a little fun at the expense of this Dayton writer...and they even go a bit further and point out how the writers at the Dayton Daily News have been "going after" Gregory and the team and "taking aim" with unwarranted rips of a reasonably successful team.

The line I have highlighted in red, suggests this is some kind of personal vendetta and not at all good journalism....read on......

Ludwig, as I noted above, said he was certain Brian Gregory was leaving Dayton for the Marquette job, and even swore he had sources to back him up.
Then when Gregory became a bit miffed and publicly denounced the reports, Ludwig removed the entire entry from his online blog, and just pretended it never existed!!

Now the Rivals writer, Matt Schwade, who covers Dayton sports has an article (it is premium)

                  and it says this......
"Gregory Not Going Anywhere ...here are some excerpts...

Things were certainly interesting this Friday....Dayton Daily News columnist Chick Ludwig dispatched his blog today saying he had a hot rumor, that Brian Gregory was all but a done deal to be headed to Marquette. Hours later, the blog was removed....

Chick Ludwig's blog was released at 10:30 this morning, and said to have been triggered from a conversation with a "head coaching" source down in San Antonio. A few hours later, the blog was taken down only to be replaced with the 404 error: "Page cannot be found."
Asked about the rumor that was "blogged", Brian Gregory said that he wasn't headed anywhere ...

For whatever reason, the hometown Dayton Daily News has been increasingly difficult to Gregory over the past couple of months.
...I'm not sure what the motive is from he and Ludwig, but it's become quite apparent they are putting more into it than just "doing their job."

Although some local print writers may not like it....(this kind of unprofessional use of false info).... is something that shouldn't be forgotten, maybe even "blogged"."

So here's one journalist who is saysing that certain rips and criticisms are NOT just part of "doing their job"....
gosh.....but we've been told for years that this is their job???
