UNI has one open scholarship. Amoroso has family that have played athletics at UNI. His hometown is about 3 hours from Cedar Falls. The coach recruiting him to UNI when he was in HS was Kyle Green (originally from Minneapolis area). Marquette was so impressed with Green's ability to get UNI up high on Amo's list coming out of HS that it led Marquette to look hard at offering Green a spot as an assistant at MU. Green ended up going to Marquette, and then Amoroso sealed the deal and verballed to Marquette. Green left after one year at Marquette to take over at Lewis U...and then 2 years later becomes UNI's assistant coach again. Amoroso decides to transfer...where do you think he will go?
Amoroso just completed a visit to UNLV, and is said to have had a good visit.
I guess it must be a very slow time when we are actually interested in tracking these guys who are deep subs, that get cut from a medium strength D-I.
Freshman forward Matt Mortenson, 6'6" 190lb.
(had a 30 pt, 12 reb game in the NIT)
Ryan Amoroso, sophomore, 6'8" 242lb.
Amoroso is said to be interested in transferring to Butler, Illinois State, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, Northern Iowa and Division II Southern Indiana. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=424693
Amoroso appears headed to UNLV, not UNI as was speculated here and on the Norhtern Iowa board.

Mensah says: "This has nothing to do with Coach McCaffery or Siena, I just don't think I got to play against the top competition night in and night out."
Ok, ok. I agree the Metro Atlantic is NOT 'the top competition night in and night out'. But of the 4 schools mentioned he wants interest from (St. John's, Providence, Duquesne and UMass), IMO, Duquesne and UMass will NOT face 'top competition night in and night out'.
To me, this is laughable. I laugh at Mensah. I am glad Siena says NO to let him go. I laugh at Mensah again. However, I don't think he will help Siena now that he is 'stuck' and has to play there. In this situation, I still laugh at Mensah - it will show his maturity. Good for Siena! Yet, I feel sorry for Siena while they put up with this 'bad-apple' attitude.
But don't you think if every coach has the right to "yank" a scholarship at any time from a kid at the school (a la Porter Moser) then the kids should also have the right to leave as long as they don't go to a conference rival?

No, T - I don't think kids should be allowed to just jump ship. In this case, if Mensah was so worried about playing against top competition night in and night out, why did he choose Siena and the Metro Atlantic to begin with. Oh wait, he has changed his mind maybe? So he thinks he is too big a fish in a small pond?
This actually kinda stinks. I think this is between Mensah and the Coach. And Mensah isn't adult enough to live up to his committment to his prior decision to play for Siena.
So I stand by my position that kids should not be allowed to turn and run whenever they feel like it.
Mensah isn't adult enough to live up to his committment to his prior decision to play for Siena..
But this happens all the time.
Hundreds of kids leave and transfer every year, and virtually every one is OK with the coach and the school. Why do you think this coach is different? The kid is from Africa and his parents are still over there, don't you think the kid's interests are a little bit more important than the coach's?
In the end, the kid can and will leave, as there is absolutely no way the school can stop him. If the school refuses to release him, thenh he can sit out a year, or pay his own way, but I suspect he will leave anyway.
This, by the way is totally, totally different from the Danny Granger or Joah Tucker situation where tampering was evident, and so don't make any comparison there. It's more like Joey Paul's situation.

T - I know it happens all the time. Does it make it right?
I don't know why this coach is different. I am sure we don't know all the facts and variables related to this situation.
As for who's interests are more important - I think it is all relative.
I am not sure why you bring up where he is from and where is family still lives. I am confused as to what this has to do with anything. I could care less.
The kid CHOSE to go to Siena. For some reason, he now wants to leave. Siena and the Coach aren't gonna let him out of his committment - for some reason. I am sure we do NOT know the real reason. IMO, it has got to be more than the kid just wanting to go somewhere else. I think there is more to the story. Programs and coaches release players all the time. I am suggesting there is something else there.
BTW, I would never make a comparison to Granger. But I know what you were hinting at.
I would have never argued against Danny Granger's right to leave the program and transfer elsewhere, and certainly JL wouldn't have either had it not been surrounded with phone calls and a transfer to the place where the tampering came from.
Here's a player transfer that involves one of the top high school player in Illinois.
Jon Rice, a 6'1" PG/SG who has been at Neuqua Valley for the past 3 years is rated #13 in the Class of 2007 by chicagohoops.com and is being recruited by a couple of MVC schools. Rice was the Regional Boys Basketball Player of the Year after leading Neuqua to a sectional final as a junior. The point guard led the Wildcats in scoring, assists, 3-pointers and free throw percentage.
He has transferred to Waubonsie Valley HS and is playing this summer with the Illinois Wolves (Carlton Fay & Sam Maniscalco's team).

And Rob Judson at NIU will hire as a new assistant Sean Harrington, ex-Illini player who is presently director of basketball operations at NIU will replace Rick Ray who left his NIU assistant position to take a similar spot at Purdue. Harrington previously had been administrative assistant/video coordinator under head coach Bill Self at Kansas
Chad Millard just completed his freshman year at Louisville, played in 32 of UL's 34 games, but is unhappy with the prospects of future playing time.
No word on where he might transfer.
Louisville article says Millard has asked for his transcripts to be sent to a couple schools out east and to Iowa State.
So is Greg McDermott going after cast-offs?
