There is a grass roots push welling up in Bloomington (IN) to
    push for getting Thad Matta.
The Hoosier message boards are lighting up about this possibility.

Matta has been at a lot of places in his career, but he has never been connected with IU or Bloomington, Indiana. He is a native of Hoopeston, Illinois. He was a high school star in basketball and went to SIU for 1 year. He then transferred to Butler where he played for 3 years. His coaching career started as a graduate assistant in the Missouri Valley under Tates Locke at Indiana State (1990-91).
He than was an administrative assistant at Butler from 1991-94, then became a fulltime assistant at Miami of Ohio from 1994-95, Western Carolina 1995-96, Miami of Ohio again 1996-97, then Butler again 1997-2000. He was then head coach at Butler for 1 season (2000-2001), then 3 years at Xavier (2001-2004, then Ohio State 2004-.

Why would he be interested in the IU job? OSU is better than IU, and he has the best recruits in the country coming in.
Besides, I am sure he has a binding contract with Ohio State, and I can't see why they would even allow him to talk to IU.

Here was an article from Thursday suggesting Indiana could look to hire a new coach from a Mid-Major school. The name they point to is Greg McDermott of UNI--

It is a subscription site. So if you can't see the whole article, here is a summary--
It lists his bio and accomplishments. Then says--
What Makes Him a Viable Candidate: Most suspect IU Athletics Director Rick Greenspan will take a good, hard look at some mid-major coaches, and McDermott is among the best available. That???‚¬?„?s been a popular route for Big Ten teams to go in recent years, with Illinois and Purdue looking to Southern Illinois for Bruce Weber and Matt Painter, respectively, and Wisconsin turning to former UW-Milwaukee coach Bo Ryan five years ago. McDermott would come with a much cheaper price tag than a Tom Crean, Rick Barnes or Thad Matta. Like it or not, that???‚¬?„?s a serious consideration for Greenspan and the IU decision-makers.

What Makes Him a Longshot: While McDermott has elevated the UNI program nationally, he???‚¬?„?s foreign to the added pressures that go with coaching at a program like Indiana, and he???‚¬?„?s also never been in situation either as a head coach or as an assistant where he???‚¬?„?s recruited on a national level. When one looks at the other mid-major level coaches that have come into the Big Ten in recent years and enjoyed success (Ryan and Weber), they were assistants at major conference schools before landing head coaching positions at their respective mid-major programs. McDermott???‚¬?„?s recruiting has always been localized.

HoosierNation.com???‚¬?„?s Take: If UNI puts together a postseason run, McDermott???‚¬?„?s stock will explode. McDermott???‚¬?„?s UNI teams have lost in the first round in each of the past two seasons, falling by five to both Georgia Tech (2004) and Wisconsin (2005). Without some noise in the postseason, McDermott might be a bit of a reach for Greenspan at this point. There are also many who suspect that he will be Iowa???‚¬?„?s No. 1 choice if and when Alford departs. That could happen this off-season if Indiana does in fact welcome the former Hoosier back home.

Friday, the same Indiana fan site that discussed Greg McDermott on Thursday, has another article about their coaching search. Today they suggest another Mid-Major name, Mark Turgeon--

If you are unable to sew the whole article, here is a summary--
It lists all his biographical info and his accomplishments at WSU (he's actually never taken a team yet to the NCAA tournament in 6 years). Then it says--
What Makes Him a Viable Candidate: He???‚¬?„?s a quality mid-major coach whose teams have improved every year during his head coaching career. His opportunity to work under people like Larry Brown and Roy Williams is a big plus, as is the fact he???‚¬?„?s had eight years of head coaching experience. His coaching opportunities at Kansas and Oregon, meanwhile, have given him a good feel for what recruiting is like at an elite program. He???‚¬?„?s probably a little bit under the radar at this point because he???‚¬?„?s yet to get his Wichita State team into the NCAA Tournament.

What Makes Him a Longshot: To most IU fans, the first reaction when they hear the name Mark Turgeon is, who? He obviously doesn???‚¬?„?t have the name recognition of many of the other possibilities such as Marquette???‚¬?„?s Tom Crean, Texas???‚¬?„? Rick Barnes, Iowa???‚¬?„?s Steve Alford or Ohio State???‚¬?„?s Thad Matta. While that doesn???‚¬?„?t make him a bad choice by any means, it might not generate the initial wave of enthusiasm as some of Greenspan???‚¬?„?s other options.

HoosierNation.com???‚¬?„?s Take: Turgeon is in a similar situation to that of Northern Iowa Coach Greg McDermott - he???‚¬?„?s a couple of NCAA Tournament wins away from being an extremely attractive coaching commodity. He???‚¬?„?s lacking a little bit of the pizzazz that generally goes with someone who???‚¬?„?s ready to take over a program of the caliber of Indiana, primarily because his team hasn???‚¬?„?t gotten much national attention due to its failure to earn an NCAA tourney invitation.
Don???‚¬?„?t be surprised if Turgeon gets a long look by Greenspan no matter what his team???‚¬?„?s fortunes in the NCAA. He???‚¬?„?s a Midwest guy, he???‚¬?„?s the product of a big-time program, and he???‚¬?„?s proven himself in his six years at Wichita State. As far as mid-major coaches go, Turgeon is on the top of my list.
