???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

The question is will IU be put on probation and maybe that is why TB turned them down. If that is the case they better go after Alford because only an alumni has the heart to go through 2-3 years of working for a program with your hands tied behind your back.

Wow! I am shocked! There must be sanctions coming then or a very good chance of them. I would LOVE for Steve Alford to return to the Hoosier state. And for the reason that SanFranciscoPete states, it just may be the best possibility.

If IU gets some heavy sanctions the they should consider getting rid of Greenspan for the hirein the first place. Why should the AD get off the hook completely?

Andy Katz article about Tony Bennett turning down IU.

After speaking to Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan on the telephone Saturday night, Washington State coach Tony Bennett told ESPN.com Sunday he has decided not to pursue the Hoosiers' head coaching job.

Well, wonder who that leaves. Sure not too many people would be all that enthusiastic about inheriting a team that will surely be on probation for the next few years, and may even get a post season ban. Does money outweigh all of that? Maybe they pick up Alford?

For all you GW bashers you have to give him cudos for leaving Ohio State to go to a Maryland program that was going into probation. Now that was loyalty and that is why it would be real tough for Maryland to get rid of him besides the NCAA championship he brought them. I just wonder who will take the job at IU if you know they will go on probation.

                  How about Isiah?

Don't think it would happen...but that would sure be fun to watch.

I'm glad for purely selfish reasons. I'm a Wisconsin fan as well, and I had always kind of hoped he'd end up taking over the Badger program when Bo Ryan eventually retires (if Bennett does indeed have a desire to return to the Midwest that is). I've always liked the guy. I grew up watching him when he was playing for his dad at UW-Green Bay, and he's made me look smart for telling everyone else in the Scout office that Bradley should go after him when Molinari was fired. He was never a realistic option given he was already head-coach-in-waiting at WSU, but that doesn't stop me from bragging.

Reports this morning say Indiana was upping their offer all the way to $2.5 million per year.
(which would likely make Bennett the highest paid college coach in the country)

Bennett also turned down offers to coach Cal
