  • Davidson's students go to game for FREE

Davidson's trustee's are using their own money to bus 300 students to Detroit, pay for their rooms and tickets! Now that is special. Their enrollment is only 1,700.

While they do not pay for bus fare, the University of Tulsa provides tickets to students all home games in all sports. In football they are about halfway back at the 35 yard line. In basketball the entire end court on the east side is students.

For bowl games the University often buys students tickets.

For the CBI, the University has reserved 2,000 tickets to provide for free to students. If not claimed, they will go on sale game day. Not sure if they have to buy the tickets from themselves for the CBI (since the CBI gets a 60% cut) or if they negotiated around that.

But I'm proud of the way Tulsa handles athletics. The program is utilized to provide a campus life for students, to enhance the reputation of the University, and to provide entertainment and interaction with the community. We also try to win from time to time.

Not a bus ride and room and board, but still more than most colleges do for kids. I think "student" tickets at OU for a season of football is more than alumni pay at Tulsa.

Does Bradley take care of students pretty well? I know you don't play on campus and you have amazing attendance (and no D-I football), so it's a different situation... still curious.

(I went to Northern Iowa for undergrad, same policy for student tickets there. Havent been to our new arena yet... long drive "home")

That's really great and it's how universities should treat their student population. It's a little more complicated at Bradley, in my opinion. To answer your question, I'd say it depends on who you ask. Though I think it would be great for the students at Bradley to wrap around the court in some fashion, I don't think it'll ever happen unless a new arena is built. There's a combination of factors why I don't think it ever would: 1. Most importantly, the "old" crowd who are season ticket holders would never go for it. 2. Because of the setup of Carver Arena (and the fact that there are a lot of fans who would rather be pushed off a cliff than stand up at a game), a student section that stands the whole game just doesn't work well with the amount of seats that would need to be filled on a game-by-game basis. 3. The student fans (aside from a select group of loyalists, 300-400 maybe?) are often very fickle and don't show up in huge numbers every game. Somehow it is a combination of not caring about basketball, fair-weather fans and other campus activities that prevent a better student turnout.

As a whole Bradley takes great care of its students via it's "Braves Club" of supporters, who will often defray the costs of traveling to tournaments, away games, etc. The university, in my opinion, could do a lot better job of reaching out to students and getting an even bigger fanbase.

But that's just how I perceive it, others may disagree. I graduated two years ago, so I've sorta seen both sides of it now.
        Go Braves!

The Braves Club has been awesome at providing students with opportunities to see games in my four years here. They have always paid for all student tickets to the Missouri Valley tournament in St. Louis.

This year they went above and beyond by providing a bus trip to Indiana, Maryland, and Ohio State for students to watch the soccer team make their run to the Elite 8. They also are pretty good about getting bus trips together on the cheap for conference away games.

Great investment that'll probably reap huge reward$ in the future!
In the future, Davidson will have 300 really good alumni donors in the future due to this outstanding experience full of school pride!

As as student I was more than happy with the fact they sold beer. No matter where I sat. I was talking with an old friend at the Loyola game about how we're spoiled, as we were both craving a nice cold one.

The end zone by the band should be all students and it should be free to anyone that wants a seat. I would guess it holds 3-400? It should be designated and promoted as a standing crowd...so sit at your own risk.

As great as the band is (and they cheer more than most), I do keep wondering if 5 rows of standing, jumping students (hard to jump with an instrument) in front of the band would be a better, high-energy atmosphere...

We have the biggest band I have seen in the Valley, and I don't know if I have seen a bigger band at any college basketball game. Plus, the band is limited in what they can say (ie they can't yell at the refs as much as the rest of us do).

                      Let's go Wildcats!!

Somehow I've managed to sneak into second place in my 2 bracket pools, despite getting only 9 of 16 teams to the sweet sixteen, but my final four are all still alive, and I've only lost one elite 8 (Kansas State, not sure what I was thinking there....). Just need The Ville to keep winning and Xavier to beat UCLA.

Did I just hear the CBS announcers say that every Davidson student with a 3.2 gets free tickets to home games?

Not sure that was what I heard.

I think they were talking about a lot of schools (or all) should have students sent to tourney games expenses paid (by the NCAA - I believe they said)... like the top GPA students, like 3.2 and better... reward them.

edit: I am usually wrong regarding what the announcers say cause I turn it down low enough that I don't hear them easily.

That's not what was said. Packer and Nantz were talking about how great it was for Davidson to get students to the game for free, and they said that it might be a cool idea to other schools to reward good students (over 3.2 GPA) with a free trip to follow their school's team to the NCAA's.
