  • Officiating Revisited

The officiating in the Missouri Valley was a topic again this past season.
The Valley front office themselves put out a couple releases telling us how much they were willing to improve the caliber of reffing in Valley games.

--Does this imply that the Valley front office is admitting their reffing was bad and that it was also bad for the Valley teams' chances in the postseason...and that the bad reffing added to the reputation of the Valley being a bush-league?
--Do you think the reffing was better in 2005-2006?
Was it even better yet in the 2nd half of the season, and in the MVC Tourney? And do you think the Valley has cast off the bush-league reputation?
--Do you think the Valley realizes now how better reffing can get the Valley teams playing better late in the season and in the post season, and how much of a benefit it can be to helping more Valley teams play well into the post season?
--Do you think the Valley is now committed to keeping the caliber of refereeing at top notch in the future?

    Here are my answers:

    --yes
    --definitely yes
    --of course
--I sure hope so, because it benefitted every team in the Valley and it benefitted the reputation and elevated the profile of the entire conference.

Here are some of our old discussions of the Valley officiating:

This first one is the official release from the Valley telling of how they are going to get better reffing this year

Perhaps Valley fans can e mail Doug Elgin and tell him we appreciate the better caliber of officiating.

I don't think there's any question that the Valley reffing was terrible, the Valley knew they needed to do something
about it, and they did it in a high profile way, with press releases and quick action to get the top referees.
And it has paid off big time, and right away.
If the Valley teams get the same kind of calls all season as they are going to get in the toureys, the it can't help but
give them more of an advantage than the cut rate reffing was giving them. On top of that, it helped Patrick
O'Bryant mature and develop into a marquis player for the Valley.
