  • Devan Bawinkel commits to Iowa

Iowa lost out on Chris Babb yesterday when he committed to Penn State.
Today, the Hawkeyes landed Devan Bawinkel, who is playing as a sophomore at Highland Community College, in Freeport, IL. He played his freshman season at West Virginia, where he played very little and averaged just 1.9 ppg.

    Premium article--

"Devan committed today to the University of Iowa," said Highland Community College assistant coach Conric Sanders.
Devan averaged 13.4 ppg, 4.7 rebounds and shot 44.5% (99-222) from three point range. Bawinkel also received MVP honors in the Arrowhead Conference.

I think DB has some talent... but when I saw him at the state tourney, I thought he was a ball-hog. Maybe that is a result of the team he had then. He had to take them on his back and carry them. But dang... it never seemed like he looked to draw defenders and find the open man. He always seemed to shoot/drive-shoot when he got the ball, 1-on-2 or 1-on-3 or 1-on-all of them. Where was his "team-player" mentality? And don't say I didn't see the action. I sat pretty close to the action that year.

This is fair and open discussion I present.

So I wish him well at Iowa.

I don't know that means he will play that way in college. You never know for sure what his HS coach ws telling him. I thought he was tough as a soph. the year PCS played them ...it didn't seem like he improved that much after that...but I only saw him down here so hard for me to say really....I thought he might be more suited for the MVC than the BT

The edits here and on the Roth thread are for some posts that use derogatory terms or call the recruits names.
It's OK to describe the things you have seen, but just avoid name-calling.

              Thanks.

I think it is really interesting, that the guy who wanted him at W. Virginia, Beilein, is now at Michigan, and yet Devan doesn't go there.
14 ppg scorers in juco exist on virtually every single juco team, some have 2 or 3.

He kind of reminds me of Dodie Dunson he is just a solid player but everyone has them way over rated. They are all most role palyers like a JJ Taui.

There have been reports that Huggins told him he wasn't his kind of player, but that he would only release him if he agreed not to transfer to Michigan with Beilein. I don't understand why, but that may be why he chose to go to juco. Then, apparently after his year at Highland JC he had interest from Michigan again, but since they got the commitment from Zack Novak and are pursuinng Kyle Cassity, they didn't need Bawinkel. His choice of Iowa seems like a good one. Lickliter likes players like Devan.

I still think he's the kind of kid that would have been more successful in the MVC than in the Big East or Big 10. He would have been very good in our system. But, obviously he has 'bigger' things on his mind. I'm not sure I see him doing a whole lot in the Big 10, although Lickliter's system seems like it would suit him well.
                      Onward and Upward!
