Washington clobbers Sterling in Class 3A quarterfinal

Washington easily beat Sterling to advance to the Final 4 in Class 3A.

Final score was 56-40.

Washington jumped out to a 15-0 lead, and lead 23-15 at halftime. In the second half, they extended the lead to 52-34 with about 2 minutes left in the game. Sterling star Joseph Bertrand was ineffective as Washington played great defense. He ended up with only about 5 or 7 points.

Just got home from DeKalb. Washington did jump on Sterling early, as Ben Worner hit three 3 pt. shots to help the Panthers lead 15-0. Matt Roth was ineffective from outside in the 1st half, but did take the ball inside for a few baskets. It was 23-15 at halftime.

Sterling continued to force the ball inside, and got Brian Tigue in foul trouble. The star for Washington in the 2nd half was Dyricus Simms-Edwards, as he continually took the ball to the rim for easy baskets or fouls. It was 31-26 as the 3rd quarter was ending, but Roth hit a long 3 at the buzzer for a 34-26 lead. Simms-Edwards then took over in the 4th quarter, and finished with 20 pts. Roth and Worner both finished with 15. There was a large Washington crowd, and the team took its trophy to the student section to share the victory with Panther nation.

Washington will play Chicago Marshall on Friday at 12 noon.

Chicago Marshall looked very good with a 30 point win over North Chicago at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. Ryan Hare was the leading scorer with 17 points and Darius Smith had 14 points for Marshall in the 84-54 win.

Since Simms-Edwards is only about 6-1, don't you think he will need to develop and demonstrate more of an all around game and outside shot before colleges will offer?
6-1 guys who get all their points driving to the basket are nonexistent in D-I ball.

No doubt he will need to work on his outside shot this summer. It is the weakest part of his game. He tries to force things a bit too much as well (i.e, dribbling between defenders, etc). He attempted a couple of 3's last night, but I don't remember him making any. He did make a nice pull up shot from the FT line in transition, but the remainder of his baskets were on layups or putbacks.

There are really good shots in the PJ Star pics, of what Simms-Edwards does best.
He can drive the lane and fool defenders with his quickness and moves.

I'm going to guess the kid won't have any trouble getting Division I scholarship offers. Hopefully Bradley will be one of those.

I never said he'd get no offers, but you have essentially backed up exactly what I did say...
Emmenecker has outstanding point guard skills, so if DS-E wants to play PG in college, he has a way to go, and if he wants to play SG he must develop a better outside shot.

Simms-Edwards is definitely a difference maker for the Panthers. IMO, they don't win that game last night without him.

Roth was off his game last night.....a lot of pressure on his shoulders to deliver a trip to state this year, when they came so close in past years. I think you can see the relief in his face and the absolute joy in Coach Brown's.

By the way.......beano, if you think Dyricus Simms-Edwards sorta came out of nowhere this fall and winter and has surprised everyone with his stellar play,
then you must only be reading the PJ Star or the national scouting services.........
...... check a couple of these old threads.......as there was at least one poster who accurately saw the caliber of this kid's talent about 6 months before most others on this board.

ph, you're talking apples and oranges here...and of course, Emmenecker has a near-total all around game just as I said he'd have to have, dribbling, passing, teamwork, unselfishness, defense...etc

And Josh Young was a terrific lights out shooter all the way through high school, and set all the season and career scoring records in his home state of Oklahoma.

Again..you have helped strongly make the exact point I was making, by citing that if a 6-1 shooting guard is going to succeed at the next level, he has to be a really good shooter from outside or have great PG capabilities, and that's exactly what my post said....
