  • NCAA recruiting violations suspected at Harvard?

Here is a New York Times article about Harvard and new basketball coach Tommy Amaker. Harvard has never won an Ivy League title in basketball, and hasn't been to the NCAA for 46 years. They are just 8-20, 3-9, and only 1/2 game out of last place in the Ivy League this season. But this article says that Tommy Amaker has landed a Top 25 recruiting class. There have been some contacts and issues that give rise to suspicions there may be NCAA violations.
I have searched, and cannot find any source that ranks the Harvard recruiting class in the Top 25 nationally, but it is pretty good, especially by standards of the Ivy League. The Ivy League does not award scholarships.

Harvard has adopted aggressive recruiting tactics that skirt or, in some cases, may even violate National Collegiate Athletic Association rules.

Some say school has lowered its standards, skirted NCAA rules

Someone forward this to Kirk Wessler and let the PJ Star know that BU isn't the only school that has problems LOL. They seem to think so.

Thanks for this post DC. I have relatives out east who are Harvard grads.
I will be certain to forward this link.
      Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

ESPN finally picks up on the problems at Harvard.

The Ivy League and Harvard will review whether recruiting violations were made by the Crimson men's basketball program.

My question to the NCAA is "Do you think Tommy Amaker just started doing this at Harvard?" Give me a break. He had to learn it somewhere. It was likely learned at Duke, and put into practice at Seton Hall and Michigan. But, I am sure a blind eye was turned when it happened at those B (as in beloved) CS schools.

I'm going to have to buy tickets next year if we are actually going to not suck....

But seriously, what are the odds that we get away with this? It seems like the Ivy takes admissions/keeping the idea of student-athletes pretty serious. Clearly if this was Sampson and a first offense it would be a wrist slap.

More importantly, how do you punish a school with no scholarships to take away and no conference post-season tournament? It seems like the choice is "no punishment" or "no NCAA." Pretty drastic options.

Cancel their athletic event of the year football game vs Yale?
