  • Recruiting report 5/1/06

After one of the major AAU events, the King James Shooting Stars Classic (Akron, OH), several of the major recruiting gurus post their observations and interviews. Of course it's all on premium sites, but here is some news from them and from some other sources.

--One of the top performers at the Classic was a St. Louis Vashon 6'6" PF named Leon Powell. He has been discussed on this board before

But Leon Powell named the schools recruiting him and this is what he said:
"Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, are all pursuing Powell, but he recently received his first offer from Bradley"
    they also say this:
"A handful of Big 12 programs are recruiting junior power forward Leon Powell (6-6) and he showed why immediately. The prep star from national power Vashon High (St. Louis) outplayed some of the nation's top players in head-to-head battles, including the Tallahassee Wildcats' A.J. Stewart (Ranked No. 77 in the class of 2007).

Powell, who plays with an aggressive streak, used his strength and athleticism to give Stewart problems on the inside and scored 16 points to lead the Saint Louis Game Face to a 54-53 comeback win. He made a handful of big plays down the stretch, including a left-handed hook shot that gave his team the lead for good with less than two minutes left. He added 20 more points in a loss to the Atlanta Celtics Gold team.
Powell runs the court extremely well and has developed a solid jumper. He is very active around the basket and a solid rebounder as well."

--A player BU is recruiting, Evan Turner, was unable to perform on Staurday due to a sore knee, but Sunday he did very well scoring 15 pts, 4 rebs, 2 stl.
(Illinois Wolves) SIU is recruiting one of McCamey's teammates, Dwight McCombs, a 6'7" fwd.

--Lance Stemler is still being hotly pursued by Marquette, even though he enjoyed his visit to Indiana this past weekend. Word on the premium Indiana board is that Stemler may have already eliminated the Hoosiers, as he realizes he will only be a role player there. He has likely narrowed his choices to St. Louis & Marquette where he is convinced he can be a starter.
(scout has a nice new article on him on the Indiana site, more on that later)

--a player being recruited hard by Wichita State and Creighton, Ben Uzoh, signed with Tulsa.

--Missouri State got a LOI this weekend from 6'7" Dextroy Manswell, a PF from Williston State Junior College.
He is not listed in the jucojunction database.

--Marquette's subscription site has a long followup with Peoria (Richwoods) Marcus Jackson, who is now playing professionally in Europe.

"Only a select few new college graduates receive perks when they're hired at their first job. Marcus Jackson joined this elite fraternity last October when he signed a one-year contract to play professionally in Germany for the Hagen Phoenix. The pact included a 2005 Mercedes-Benz A-Class and a rent-free apartment."

He doesn't mention Peoria at all in the interview.

--Ty Morrison had a nice visit to Gonzaga this past weekend, and is far from choosing Creighton at this point. He is likely to take at least one other visit, probably to Minnesota.

One more mention of Bradley recruiting a kid....

On the DePaul premium site is a nice article about the next fine guard out of Hales Franciscan, Matthew Humphrey.

6'6" sophomore, Humphrey, can nail the outside shot as well as handle the ball and drive to the basket.

"Although he lines up at the shooting guard for the MeanStreets and did much the same for his Hales squad, Humphrey does possess point guard skills, another positive factor that is attractive to college programs. An underrated defender, he is looking for this summer to be a forum for him to increase his footspeed, going up against some top talent at various tournaments. He also is looking to add some strength to his frame..."

"Currently, programs such as Illinois, Iowa, DePaul, Georgia, Bradley, Missouri and Northern Iowa have all expressed interest in Humphrey."

More on Leon Powell, new Rivals article:

"One of the most impressive prospects at the first annual King of the South tournament in Nashville this past weekend was a junior who is just beginning to land on the radar of some major programs.

Leon Powell, a 6-foot-6 power forward from national power Vashon High in Saint Louis, outplayed some of the nation's top prospects, including top 100 junior A.J. Stewart and highly-touted sophomore Chris Singleton, in head-to-head matchups.

Powell is receiving interest from a handful of Big 12 schools, including Kansas and Missouri. Illinois has also inquired about him, along with a handful of mid-majors, Bradley, Saint Louis and Missouri State."
