Of course Phil doesn't think basketball is important, but some people might just be able to make a living playing basketball in the future, and I think if you ask those people, they would disagree.
Of course, those people may be among those who don't get an opinion in Phil Luciano's world.

..and dont you just love the fact that "Cowboy Phil" labels everyone with an opinion that is contrary to his opinion with the sentence:

" Another month, another episode of deep thinking via Random Ax of Snideness."

....and directly below his remark the column leads off with the Ruffin issue.

Look at the first two opinions from the readers. The readers are expressing an opinion without the least bit of sarcasm. However the response from "Cowboy Phil" is dripping with sarcasm.

I guess "Cowboy Phil" and the PJS thinks this will increase circulation.

Being from out of town, I never paid any attention to Phil Luciano's column when I read the online PJS. My interest has pretty much been on any article dealing with Bradley University, sports and academics alike.

Now that Professor Luciano has decided to lecture the Bradley basketball fans on wrong vs. right, I became so intrigued by his nonsensical blatherings that I have begun to wonder who is this character and does he really believe in what he is writing ... or is he merely trying to get a rise out people?

The guy is a bit of a nut in my opinion, but that hardly matters in the scheme of things. If his employer, the PJS likes him, then good luck to all involved. As a Bradley alum though, I am a bit disturbed that a lightweight hack like this would be teaching at Bradley. That is somewhat embarrassing.

I just hope nobody takes his articles too seriously as they appear to be, at best, light hearted material written for entertainment purposes, not really the stuff of serious journalism.

In doing a bit of background reading on the Professor, I did find this blog which questions Dr. Luciano's grasp of the legal system.

Sure it is his job. But my point is that Luciano could be far more effective with his opinion column if he dropped the snide remarks. (and humor--he really isnt funny but he thinks he is) In my opinion, a writer who labels people who do not use sarcasm and then tears people's opinions down to support HIS (Luciano's) opinion is a sign of weekness on behalf of the columnist.

I doubt anybody has gone out and purchased additional papers on account of PL. I've simply read the articles online. More likely, it might boost online readership and in turn allow the PJS to earn more advertising money.

I wouldn't want to be a pot stirrer as a job. After a while, you probably lose touch with your own honest opinions and turn into a souless shrill with no internal compass bearings.

Many years ago, people used to buy newspapers to read opinions of columnists like Mike Royko (Chicago Tribune and Sun Times), and maybe even Rick Baker (Peoria Journal Star). They were sometimes insulting and obnoxious, but they were also thought-provoking and entertaining. But I think those days are long gone, and I agree that nobody buys a paper anymore to read just one opinion. or one column. There are simply too many other options available on the internet, including usually those opinion columnists.

That concept is long gone....back in the day when papers had to be "hawked" by roadside vendors someone would or might scream......Phil Luciano blasts message boards and all the posters...get the story now" as people walked by his news stand.

I bet not a single person woke up this morning and said....man I got to get to the gas station and get my PJstar to see what Phil said. Today some get a paper because they want to read about BU in the sports section and hear about the game tonite with CU. People get papers for consistency....we all know BU will be written about today.

Phils goal is to get people to just simply read his column. He wants people to be sitting on the sdge of their seats just waiting to see what he has to say next. He's trying to create a following just like Reynolds , Wessler and others do with BU basketball. I would offer even in THAT case its less about WHO is writing the article and MORE abouit the subject (BU).

Very true DC. I didnt always agree with Royko or Rick Baker, but I respected the fact that their articles for the most part were well thought out as well as thought provoking and entertaining.
