  • The Story Seems to Change

No opinions here, just facts, quotes, and the exact statements (cut and
pasted) from the different media sources describing the woman's injury.

You decide.....but I ask, why do the different media sources, most of
whom interviewed either the alleged victim or the police themselves, come up
with widely differing descriptions of the alleged injuries?

Check the links yourself or use the easy hyperlinks I have provided.

    2/23...WMBD...."use of hands and feet"

    2/23...PJ Star... "alleged battery"

    2/23...PJ Star.... "allegedly choked"

2/24...Springfield Journal Register...."A Peoria police spokesman said officers arrested Ruffin around 5:30 a.m. Saturday at his apartment on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge. The 23-year-old remains in Peoria County Jail awaiting a ruling on bond.
Police say a 20-year-old woman accused Ruffin of cutting her lip as he tried to get her out of his apartment."

2/24...WQAD....."20-year-old woman accused Daniel Ruffin of cutting her lip early yesterday morning"

2/24....PJS.... "busted lip" (in phone interview with alleged victim)

2/24...PJ Star...."he allegedly choked a 20-year-old female Bradley student...Alisha R. White, who also lives oncampus but in a separate residence from Ruffin, went to the hospital with visible injuries to her neck...She declined further comment but did say she was choked during the incident"

2/24....Daily Herald....."20-year-old woman accused Ruffin of cutting her lip as he tried to get her out of his apartment"

2/24 Associated Press...."20-year-old woman accused him of cutting her lip as he tried to get her to leave."

2/24.......WMBD...."(no mention of the injury at all)...She did not want her name released, but did have this to say: "I'm grateful it didn't turn out worse than it did. Females who go through this need to stick together during times like these."

2/25....Chicago Trib...."20-year-old woman accused him of cutting her lip as he tried to get her to leave"

2/25...... PJ Star ..."White claimed to have visible injuries on her neck"

OK....the only description of visible injuries on the neck come from the woman, not from hospital reports or from police reports.
No police source I have seen mentions choking or marks on her neck.
Numerous sources quote the police regarding the lip injury while the woman was being asked to leave the apartment....BUT......
oddly, the PJ Star has never once mentioned this scenario.

Thank you so much for Eric Peterson’s story, “Left without a home.” The story broke my heart and gave me continued empathy for those who just need a little extra “hand up” and not a “hand...

After reading that post, am I to understand that you have read THE hospital report and THE police report?

wow, that's a total misread of whatever is said....

Nothing in my post even hints at that, it is just a list of the media reports of the woman's injury.

A couple of other interesting media tidbits:

        1. The Bloomington Pantagraph reported the incident in Sunday morning's sports section on the front page with a color picture of Daniel, yet the game must have been CANCELLED! ;(

If you read the "Missouri Valley Roundup," all Valley games were give a brief mention, except one...Bradley's victory over UWM!

        2. I know that television media utilizes police "mugshots" when reporting on an incident. In most cases there is no other photo of the accused and it is the only image available for broadcast (this had just come after a report about the gunman who holed himself up in the home yesterday in Peoria and the use of the mugshot in that report).

That is obviously not the case with Daniel Ruffin. The number of images of him must rank in the thousands. Yet WEEK in their news broadcast last night at 10 felt the need to use the police photo of Daniel in their broadcast.

All of this while the details of the story are very vague and yet to be sorted out. IMO the choice was unecessary.

Then I guess I would question if the PJ Star has access to the police department's photo of Ruffin, then why do they never make even
one mention of the police departments description of the incident as seen in numerous other media outlets...
"Police say a 20-year-old woman accused Ruffin of cutting her lip as he tried to get her out of his apartment."

They are virtually the only news source covering this story that does not mention this statement from the police.

I don't disagree that the media reports of this story seemed to have changed by the hour...but unfortunately, I don't think that is going to help Daniel get back on the basketball court. The one thing that doesn't seem to have changed in this case is that Daniel's accuser still contends that the abusive action occurred. And as long as that part of the story doesn't change, I don't see how Ruff can be reinstated to play until this plays itself out in court.

See, I disagree here. If Ruffin says he's innocent then I don't see any reason to keep him off the court until he's found guilty of something. Continuing to suspend him when there's some doubt as to his innocence, is the same thing as considering him guilty until proven innocent.

You don't reserve the right to split someone's lip, however, in the process of removing someone from your place of residence.
