I would say the biggest comparison this could possibly draw would be to Kentucky's near death penalty in the mid 80's. Kentucky's revival in the early 90's was by a guy who had been successful in college, but tried his hand at the NBA and failed miserably. That guy was Rick Pitino. Rick was a name, but not like he is now. He was still a young up-and-comer. I'd look for a guy like that or a Scott Drew type.

Great points BB! I guess I'm just expecting a "name" program like IU to get off easy from the NCAA by proactively decapitating the problem

You could be right, but I think the NCAA is going to lay the hammer down because IU knowingly got into this situation, and did it right in the NCAA's backyard (45 minutes or so from the NCAA's offices in Indy).

Dan Dakich might be the guy in the short term. He played for Knight, has been squeaky clean his whole career, and was a somewhat decent coach at Bowling Green. As Da Coach was saying, with the biggest-of-the-big IU donors wanting a Knight disciple, I can't help but think that Royce Waltman gets some consideration. He was a longtime Knight assistant, and had some great success at Indiana St with 2 tourney berths and a tourney win. I could see Pat Knight and Steve Alford's names being floated around too, although I have heard Alford isn't thought of too highly in Bloomington anymore.

Drew took over a mess of a Baylor program that had a lot of internal issues and has turned it into a quality team this season. Plus, he has ties to the state of Indiana through Valpo, so he has an up-close understanding of how huge IU is and knows the state very well.

And just how many "big names" will be on the market after this season? Still too early to say, but I don't see that many "hot" coaches being out on the market.

But can Drew keep the incoming recruits from wanting to bolt IU? That is why I think Dakich could be the key to at least the intermediate term.

            Isiah Thomas
            Book it

HAHAHAHA now that would make Illini fans real happy.

Seriously the hire will have to be within the family at IU and that means someone with connects to Knight. If anything to reestablish that bridge.

I think it's likely that NCAA penalties will include a 1 or 2 year ban on postseason appearances.

In that case, most recruits with the ability to choose will opt out of their LOI and go elsewhere regardless of who becomes coach.

I really think that IU is going to stay in-house for their next hire. After the disgracful end that has come to the Kelvin Sampson era, I would guess they'll at least start their search by looking for guys in the "IU family."

Dane Fife? Former Hoosier current IPFW coach. I think he and Drew are the most likely candidates.

I duno about Fife, he's still really young. I know he's been a coach for a few years, but how old is he, I know he's the youngest coach in Division 1.

Isiah would have a field day with all the co-eds! I'm sure he would love to leave NY!

Would Calipari leave Memphis for IU? You really just never know. IU is a storied program where IU will get their pick of big names. There's a couple of great coaches out there that would be great choices. Mike Montgomery who coached at Stanford would be one.
