  • Officiating

I heard on Fox sports net last night the announcer state that this was one of the best officiating crews in the conference. I have to disagree. They ref many big time games including several at Carver and blow/miss ALOT of calls. Consistency is always an issue with this crew, and I hate to see them walk onto the floor.

For instance, we got called last night for a couple of questionable offensive fouls, then later JC flies into the lane, defender slides in front of him in perfect charge taking form, and they call the block. Or a out of control Drake player travels down the lane, and they call a foul on Ruff.

Don't get me wrong, love the win, hate the officiating crew.

You can usually look at the score and tell who is going to get the call in a charge/block situation in the Valley. When Bradley had the lead and Matt Salley turns toward the basket and Korver flops, they give him the charge. When Bradley is down and Jeremy drives the lane and Korver flops, it's a three point opportunity. Korver actually had better position in the play where he got called for the foul.

      Flop

There's nothing worse than having a game decided by bad acting. Some of those calls ... especially in the first half ... were atrocious. The Drake defenders were in position to take legitimate charges, but did the Fosbury Flop instead. If you're going to get the call to ought to pay the price. No pain, no gain. Makes me think of the Valley's all-time flop artist, Mike Vandegarde. I doubt he ever felt the pain of a legitimate charge.

The crew that did the game is one of the better crews in the MVC (at least some of the officials on the crew). John Higgins did the BU/SIU game last year in St. Louis, the BU/ISU game this year at Carver, and last night's game. He also does several BCS games across the country (which is probably where he'll be tonight). I am not as familiar with the other two officials from last night (Gerry Pollard, Kipp Kissinger). Higgins is pretty solid though, IMO. I agree, it sure didn't look like they were calling a good game, but fortunately or unfortunately they are one of the best crews this league gets.

This is a great site on the nation's officials, what games they called, and how many fouls they called. Nice to see our old friend Tim Hutchinson isn't contacted by the MVC anymore.

        Onward and Upward!

Although the ISU fans still claim Chad Kleine was the most prolific flopper....but at least Chad stood and took the hit and got more legitimate charge calls. Vandegarde mostly pulled "Greg Paulus-like" flops, with phantom contact...

If you want to see some funny flops and bad acting on charging calls...
          watch these:
Greg Paulus flops before anyone even gets close to him. (There was no call because they were not ACC refs).

Here's an interesting article.......seems lots of people think Duke is ruining
college basketball with all the orchestrated and rehearsed flops.

In case you don't have time to read the article....
here is the official NCAA rule with emphasis on this part of it for the present season:

"When a defensive player attempts to draw a charge, but establishes defensive position late, he shall be penalized for a block."

            Please refs............follow the rule!!!

The thing I didn't like about either charge call....(Salley and Austin's)...were that the defender was basically allready tight against the offensive player. You stand next to me and allow me to turn into you and see if I can knock you down...get real. Now if I lower my shoulder and plow right into you...I can see it. But these two calls were basically "normal" contact.

To me a charge has to be obvious. A guy coming down the lane and just bowling over the defender.

                  Officials

To me Gerry Pollard is the Willie Sanchez of the Valley circa 2000.
A very erractic ref, who likes to challenge the coaches and take over the game. He makes calls on plays that are not even his area of responsibility.
Willie had the misfortune of ripping his Achilles and had to retire from being a Ref. To the dismay of absolutely nobody,
As for Kissinger, Dave Snell said we were 2-11 in games Kissinger worked.
                  Now we are 3-11.

Exactly! He's awful and always seems to have it out for Bradley. Earlier in the year some of us in the student section were heckling him, no profanities or anything, he actually got into it with us and threatened to kick us out. I hope he never works another BU game again.

If i have said it once, I have said it 1000 times. Kissinger is a terrible official. Called JL's T from across the court... Correct me if i am wrong but I don't think JL was even talking to him

YES!! Grassman you, IMHO are the POSTER OF THE DAY.

In what has been a rather uneventful day on the board, you bring up WILLIE SANCHEZ.

Contgrats! A man has to truely be at one with himself and his angst toward Valley refs to still have Willie Sanchez stuck in his memory somewhere!

I actually think Higgins has gotten a lot better the last 2 years as he does not blow his whistle all the time, Pollard thinks he is the show and when he blows his whistle you pretty much know that it is going to be against Bradley , I just believe he hates BU for whatever reason and it go"s back to win Molinari was the coach so it probably has something to do with the fans as he cannot deal with them getting on him as witnessed by his exchange with the students this season, a good ref never pays attention to the crowd .

                              I'm just having fun.

The Willie Sanchez reference made me laugh. I don't know if I could have remembered him unless someone brought up his name.
