  • Bobby Knight to Missouri State...????

    Thats the rumor flying around.

    Re: Bob Knight to MSU?
Can't confirm that right now but there are some heavy rumors flying around town about it. Knight is good friends with the O'reilly Family (automotive), and Johnny Morris (founder of Bass Pro), and there may have been some preliminary conversations about it between them. The O'reilly's want Barry out and certainly have the money and the clout to help with a coach's big payday if needed. May or may not be true but I sure hope that it is. I feel pretty confident that the Bears are going for a big name regardless of what happens with Knight.

Well, there is plenty of fishing grounds in Mo St's area.

HA HA! I mentioned this on another thread a couple of weeks ago that I wouldn't be shocked if Knight ended up at a team like Missouri St. There was no rumor that he would actually come to Springfield, I just thought that Missouri St would be the type of place that would hire him.

It turns out I may even be more right than I thought!

I heard an interview with Pat Knight on WSCR in Chicago a couple days ago. He said the reason Bobby Knight stepped down now was because he had lost his enthusiasm for coaching. He did not like the travel, and he had pretty much given up all the recruiting duties to his assistants the last couple years. He realized that top-level recruits want to see the head coach, and not the assistants.
He concluded he was hurting the recruiting, and didn't have the desire to keep coaching. Texas Tech is just 13-11 this season, and doesn't look likely to be much better next year in a much improved Big 12.

If that is all true, what would be different at Missouri State? Would they want a coach that has lost his enthusiasm for coaching? That doesn't like to travel and recruit? That would rather be fishing?

Mo St had cases to be in the NCAA in 07, 06, and 00 but did not get a bid in any of those years. I'm not saying they shoulda had a bid any or all of those years, just they had good cases to get a bid and got passed up... 3X!

The timing wasn't good this year for Barry to be making his first play-in round appearance. He'll most likely be canned, but I would be that he'll end up on his feet somewhere and take another school to the NCAA's.

Bobby Knight in the MVC would be something else.

              We'll see but I don't think it'll happen.
Missouri State is several years away from being good, and they probably won't ever be as good as they were under Steve Alford,
and I wonder if that's what Bob Knight wants to always be talking about.

I also do not see coach Knight taking another coaching job anywhere next season but it would not surprize me to see him coaching somewhere in a couple of years and maybe not even a division 1 school as he likes to teach .

I just don't see Bobby Knight going to Springfield, too much work to be done there.

They need to get somebody to help fill those 12,000 seats.

I really like Hinson too. You can't put the blame of MSU not earning a bid on him. One more win here and there could have put them over the top, but it should never have come to that point.

Other than Knight, who could they hire that would put MSU back in the Valley elite? Not many in my opinion. And like I said, I don't think Knight would be hired, it's just that I would not be shocked if MSU did hire him. At this stage in his career, it would probably be a higher end mid-major team that would hire him to get their program on the right track, and MSU would qualify as one of those types of teams. But yes it still would be a long shot, and aside from many MSU detractors, I happen to like Barry and I don't want to see him axed.

                          What I could see.........................

Hinson to St. Louis Univ.......................Hinson's firing gives St. Louis the green light to can Majerus and bring in someone who can coach and recruit the mid-west athlete.

Knight to some studio (if he chooses to keep his hand in the game and wants an easy paycheck). He can make more money than coaching a mid-major by working for a network doing pre-game and half-time, and still have plenty of time to hunt and fish.

                            You're ready to can Majerus?

The guy has done nothing but win everywhere he's coached.

Majerus will not be canned based on his record and coaching ability but based on what he says and how he acts at a Catholic Univ.
