Now they are going after Steve Lavin, and if he won't take the job then the final resort will be to throw tons of $$ at West Virginia coach John Beilein. If he doesn't take the job, then there are very few other options still on the table.
NC State's desire is to spend oodles to get someone who can do for them what Roy Williams has done at UNC and what K-SDtate is trying to do.
They want a winner and they want it now, but they are going well into the second tier of options now.

A recent article stated that one of the qualifications that NC State was not willing to compromise on is:
"minimum of five years head coaching experience at an NCAA Division I school"

That eliminates guys who were initially listed in their search like:
Frank Haith, Chris Lowery, Jim Les.

I would be shocked if it was Lavin. It doesn't fit the mold of what he was looking for if/when he decided to coach again, but millions of dollars have a way of changing what people are looking for.

I have read where NC State is prepared to offer up to $2 million per year in total package to get who they want, but that ploy has not worked for Calipari, John Brady, and others so far.

By the way, several news/sports reporting outlets are claiming that Matt Doherty will be announced shortly as new head coach at SMU.

Doherty coached at Notre Dame 99-00, then was hired at UNC, going to the NCAA as the #1 ranked team and earning National Coach of the Year honors from AP.
After two successive years where UNC didn't do as well as hoped, he was forced out as UNC hired Roy Williams.

Now Steve Lavin has publicly said he does not want the NC State job.

Word is already being circulated on the NC State message boards that Beilein has accepted and the announcement is being delayed while Beilein talks to his players and other people in Morgantown, WV.

Here is the even more amazing part of this whole story....
Bob Huggins' alma mater is West Virginia, and he has always said that if the job ever opened up, he'd go hard after it, and some rumor in Morgantown is that they are going to try to pry him out of his new contract at K-State and get him at WVU.
It'll be amazing if it happens.

Devan Bawinkle if Beilein leaves West Virginia. Interesting.

Indeed he had not signed a contract, and apparently
just now has finally signed with Kansas State.In fact, just Friday, Bob Huggins signed a contract and it was announced by K-State:

But this is also another momentous day for Huggy, since it was TWO YEAR to the day (6/12/04)n that Bob Huggins was suspended from his job at Cincinnati after he was charged with drunk driving following his arrest earlier in the week.
