As many of you know I haven??™t posted much (less than 10 times) in the last two years. It had gotten, for me, to the point where I started getting enjoyment out of people on the message boards being wrong, and lost the fun of being a fan.
So for me to come on here, saying things that are perceived to be negative, will I am sure lead some to not respond constructively, agree or disagree, or factually. Here are, however, my views on the state of the program.
First off, for me, the ???program??? and the ???process??? is more important than single blips on the radar. I am not calling for Jim Les head. But I am calling for a reality check as to what is important in this basketball program.
I see the following issues:
Poor Conference Play
Jim Les is currently 49-55 (.471) in league play, with no top 3 finishes in his tenure, one semi-final win in the MVCT and no championships.
He has, up to this point, had no player recruited as a freshman, that has made first team all conference.
I suspect no Bradley coach, has ever been below .500 in league after 6 years, much less been as secure as JL would have appeared to be, prior to the hiring of the new President.
Questionable Recruiting (Part 1)
Over-reliance on junior college players, transfers, and non-qualifiers
i. It seems to me that Lawrence Wright, Will Franklin, Tony Bennett, and Zach Andrews are the exception, not the norm
1. Of those 4, except for TB, there was a break-in time of ?? to 1 year before they became ???good???
2. 2 of the 4 WF and TB were extremely good basketball leaders, once again the exception, not the norm, from JUCO??™s
ii. A sad fact that of the 5 junior college players on the roster, over the conference season they are averaging a combined
1. 14 MPG
2. The top two (MS,TW) are averaging 25.6 MPG
3. The bottom 3 are averaging 7 MPG
iii. Lack of success with question marks
1. Daniels grade situation made him a question, which turned out to be a huge success (as he has been great as a student athlete, and is a plus for the university, PHS and the City) but caused us to be without a PG when our starter had bad knees (notice the difference with Sam this year, and what another PG might have done to help that year)
2. Marcellus finished extremely well at BU, but was turnover prone, and did not have a record indicative of his talent level
3. Jeremy Fears,Deaaron Williams &Dwight Buyks
a. First two had known issues from the outset, taken in the same class, result is well known
b. Buycks was worth the risk, but not with the situation of the other two, making it a triple whammy, and creating a domino effect of getting the juco??™s who aren??™t playing
Questionable Recruiting (Part 2)
1. Lack of players playing 4 years at Bradley under JL??™s tenure
a. Only Tauai, Crouch, Ruffin, Singh, Adams will have completed 4 years of school under JL after JL completes his 7th year
b. Rembert, Brown, O??™Bryant, Jassey, Paul (Mo recruit, so understandable) all left before completing eligibility
2. Too much going out of standardized recruiting area to get players
a. To my recollection, it has been at least 12 years (Deon Jackson?), since a recruit:
i. Made first team all conference
ii. Stayed at BU for 4 years
b. This is a good indicator that we have to get back home to be successful in recruiting.
i. Sam M, Andrew should be the norm and the expectation, not the exception
Once again, these are just my opinions. I am a believer in a ???program??? not a team. It may skew my judgment from yours, and I understand that.
