  • Manual Cass

Just when you thought you could believe Manual Cass, he changes his story again.
he says he is still committed to DePaul, then over the weekend, he says something else altogether.

"Also looking good for the Warriors was reclassified 2007 forward Manuel Cass.
After his game, Cass had this comment about his college situation.

".............if things go like I hope they do this summer, I'll open it back up."

He said that he is already hearing from Boston College and Memphis."

All's well that ends well for BU in this situation. Thank God we avoided this mess.

      Cass--
--despite his talent, he gets in trouble and gets kicked off his high school team
--he asks to be reinstated and is given the OK by the coach, but then leaves school anyway.
--he transfers after a several week delay to Boys to Men where he doesn't play or produce a whole lot.
--he commits to DePaul despite being recruited by Dave Leitao who is no longer at DePaul
--he signs his LOI despite the new coach at DePaul, Jerry Wainwirght committing NCAA recruiting violations with illegal visits to sign him.
--despite that DePaul openly admits to committing the recruiting violations, and gives a totally airbrained excuse for it, the NCAA has yet to rule in any way or hand down any penalties to THE BIG EAST SCHOOL.
--Then after years to prepare and numerous efforts to get a decent test score, Cass finds himself unable to qualify.
--then Cass renegs on his LOI and changes his mind again and says now he will go to prep school, but he says he still is committed to DePaul
--Now he says his committment to DePaul is ONLY if he doesn't get what he considers an even better offer.

Does anyone besides me see a very troubling pattern here??
How badly does a team need a kid who has had but one decent year in high school, against a questionable caliber of opponents?

One more thing to note in the Manual Cass story.

Even though he has previously stated he is still committed to DePaul, now he has told a reporter from Rivals that he is likely to reopen his recruiting now that he's heard from Boston College and Memphis.

"Former Carbondale and Boys To Men forward Manuel Cass' commitment to DePaul is in jeopardy. At the Kingwood Classic in Houston, Cass told Rivals.com that if the summer went as he planned, he would reopen his recruitment. He said Boston College and Memphis have contacted him. DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright has stood by Cass through numerous discipline and academic issues as well as his reclassification to the Class of 2007."

A new twist in the saga of Manual Cass. He was recruited by Bradley, but verballed to DePaul when DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright illegally visited his home just before the signing period, when contact was illegal.
Then he dropped out of Carbondale high school and transferred to Boys to Men prep school in Chicago. Then he reclassified himself as a junior. But he still claimed he was committed to DePaul. Then he announced recently that he had reopened his recruiting for next year at Boys to Men.

Now here is a Scout.com premium article titled-
"Manuel Cass is on the Move Again"
            http://depaul.scout.com/2/535594.html (requires a password)

His AAU coach, Larry Butler, affirms-
"He???‚¬?„?s reopened his recruitment,???‚¬?? Butler said. At this point, Cass has put his name back on the market"

It also says he has decided not to return to Boys to Men Academy, and will transfer for his 5th year to another prep school either in Indiana or out east somewhere.

At this point, I suspect that even Wainwright has had enough of Manual Cass.

In a rather irrelevant bit of news-

Philip Fayne, a former Carbondale high school teammate of Manual Cass, just committed to Duquesne.

Fayne was at Southwestern Illinois college and was a teammate of Lance Stemler there. When he was at Carbondale, he played a large part in their run to the Illinois State tournament a couple years ago, and had several Div I schools interested in him, but he did not qualify for Div I.

Fayne might face some competetion for playing time at Duquesne. They had a coaching change and the new coach has cleaned house. Here is the list of their new committments just for this spring. I have never seen any school bring in as many new players in 1 year--

                Committments for 2006---

Word at Boys to Men is that when Manual Cass left and headed to prep school, Jerry Wainwright yanked the offer, and plans not to waste any more time on Cass.

That could be the first smart thing Wainwright has done since going to DePaul.

That scout article claims Cass was a "one-time Bradley commitment".
Do they know something we don't? Did Cass commit to BU then reneg and commit to DePaul?

Maybe they got that information from Jerry Wainwright. He's the only one who will ever know whether Cass was going to commit to Bradley. Wainwright must have feared so, why else would he sneak down to Carbondale, knowingly breaking NCAA rules to secure the signed LOI?
