And nothing will happen to IU that is what I have been saying all along.

      Latest updates--

And recall that IU assistant coach Rob Senderoff was already fired as a "fall guy" over these violations. Now here is a USA Today article with a quote released by another Indiana assistant coach, Jeff Meyer, at the bottom admitting fault ("I regret that I may have made mistakes").

Is this another attempt to deflect blame away from Sampson, and onto another assistant? Is this Jeff Meyer guy going to get fired next to try to salvage Sampson's career, and Indiana's great recruiting class? Don't put it past Sampson to sacrifice as many assistants as he needs to.--

I find it funny that KSanctions was already not allowed to make ANY phone calls and then was a part of "over 25" calls that exceeded limits set for coaches with CLEAN records. Not only was the cheater cheating by disregarding his punishment from previous cheating, but he was flat out cheating . You gotta wonder how much other stuff this guy has done that went undetected or happened before people started to realize he was a cheat. At the very least KSanctions should be lead quietly out of Bloomington while a chunk of the players he recruited while cheating transfer out. In the middle of the road, he should never be hired again. What I want to see is IU step up and declare themselves ineligible for postseason, even if its 2009. Won't happen, oh well. Why would anyone want to be part of such a dishonest program? Why would anyone put themselves in that position, possibly not getting to have even a CHANCE to the play in the NCAA? Just doesn't make much sense..

ESPN now has this headline on the main basketball page--

          NCAA Cites Scandal At Indiana
Kelvin Sampson and his Indiana staff violated telephone recruiting restrictions imposed because of Sampson's previous violations at Oklahoma, then lied about it to the school and NCAA investigators, the NCAA said Wednesday.

The above link has a video about this story.

And here is a link to the actual NCAA letter that was issued to Indiana. It is quite detailed about the illegal calls, who made them, and which athletes they were made to. Interesting reading. It is impossible, IMO, that these coaches could make all these calls and not be fully aware that each and every one was an NCAA violation that they were knowingly committing, while they were on probation prohibiting such calls!--

I have heard that the NCAA will come down hard and issue Indiana one of its
harshest penalties yet, they will prohibit Indiana from having Erin Andrews do
any of their games for the next two years!

Last night wasn't that bad of a night. It started out pretty bad with BU losing to a pretty lowly opponent, but it ended on a pretty high note with Illinois thumping Minny on the road and then the news of the sanctions! I hope the NCAA really does ban them from the tourney for 2-3 years. Let's see how many "top recruits" end up transferring because of this.

Wow--- I just spent a little time checking out the activity over on the premium Rivals/Indiana board
                    (peegs.com)

There is intense concern and activity with over 2000 people online right now, discussing lots of topics.
In fact, their present numbers are even rivaling their MOST activity ever, about 3000 people online on 11/04/06, the day Eric Gordon signed.

There are been a press conference announced for today at 5PM (Eastern)

It is a foregone conclusion that IU will try to candy coat it, but there will be announcement of serious violations by Sampson and IU.
"Indiana University Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan and Associate Athletic Director/SWA Grace Calhoun
will be available to address the media at 5 pm in the basketball press room of Assembly Hall tonight."

Some think the news conference will announce that Sampson is suspended from coaching and others think the news conference will only detail what the NCAA is mulling over, and they'll try to ride it out hoping for a miracle that the NCAA will give only a slap.

But I am fully surprised by the number and the intensity of the posts that are entitled...

"Greenspan & Sampson Need to Go!"
"Looks like Ratliff got out at just the right time..........."
"Can IU fire Sampson at this point?"
                    ".......losing support for Greenspan..."
"Coincidence that Bob Knight left Ttech last week?"

and numerous, numerous threads suggesting various different replacement coaches from Sean Miller, to Scott Skiles, to Jim O'Brian, to Dan Dakich, Randy Wittman, to even (believe it or not) Bob Knight and Bruce Weber!!

and one of the articles is........
                    "NCAA Not Buying Sampson's Explanation"

                    Here is the summary:
"NCAA: Sampson misled IU about calls

Indiana University men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson "repeatedly" provided "false or misleading information" to the school and NCAA investigators, according to a list of five major violations the NCAA is alleging against IU.

                    Potential major violations
The NCAA allegations cited in the NCAA letter to IU are:

                    1. That (Kelvin) Sampson, (assistant coach Jeff) Meyer and (former assistant Rob) Senderoff failed to comply with sanctions
imposed on Sampson for impermissible recruiting calls he made while he was a coach at Oklahoma. Those sanctions followed Sampson to IU when he came here in May of 2006.

Sampson and Senderoff are alleged to have jointly participated in telephone calls at a time when Sampson was prohibited from
being present or taking part when staff members made recruiting calls.

Senderoff and Meyer are alleged to have made about 100 calls that exceeded the sanction limits. Senderoff resigned his position Oct. 30.

                    2. That Senderoff and Meyer placed "at least 25 telephone calls" to nine potential recruits that exceeded NCAA limits even if no sanctions had been in place.

                    3. That Sampson "acted contrary to the NCAA principles of ethical conduct when he knowingly violated recruiting restrictions imposed by the NCAA Committee on Infractions," and that he "failed to deport himself in accordance with the generally recognized high standard of honesty normally associated with the conduct and administration of intercollegiate athletics by providing the institution and the NCAA enforcement staff false or
misleading information," and that he "failed to promote an atmosphere for compliance within the men's basketball program and failed to monitor the activities regarding compliance of one or more of his assistant coaches."

                    4. That Senderoff "acted contrary to the NCAA principles of ethical conduct when he knowingly violated recruiting restrictions imposed by the NCAA Committee on Infractions," and that he "failed to deport himself in accordance with the generally recognized high standard of honesty normally associated with the conduct and administration of intercollegiate athletics by providing the institution false or misleading information."

                    5. That Sampson and Meyer engaged in an impermissible recruiting contact during a two-day sports camp held at Assembly Hall on June 30 and July 1, 2007, and that Meyer provided the potential recruit with an impermissible benefit **** at least one T-shirt and drawstring backpack."

and a poll of message board posters has about 80-20% favoring KS gets FIRED!!

Oh...and as if IU needed even more bad news...several FB players were arrested on various charges...
disorderly conduct charges, noise ordinance violations, resisting arrest, illegal consumption and public intoxication....
Indiana football players James Bailey and Demetrius McCray were arrested on misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges after complaints of loud music at their apartment.

Does anyone think like I do, that had this been BU, there'd be talk of the death penalty
and severe, severe, immediate penalties including a lifetime ban for whoever our coach is and post season bans?

Instead...it appears, Sampson will be allowed to stay by the NCAA and that they won't act on penalties until at least this summer, but rumor exists that IU is trying to buy him out and get rid of him.

I would not expect to see Sampson get fired at this point. That would be too damaging to the program, and would require that the AD who hired him admit it was a big mistake, something I doubt he would do until he is forced to.

Instead, I look for another assistant coach to take a bullet like what happened a few months ago.
Since Jeff Meyer's name surfaces many times in the NCAA report (along with the previously fired Rob Senderoff), he is the obvious choice to be the next sacrificial lamb.

And BTW- if and when Sampson does get released, IMO, Indiana would not need to "buy him out". These willful violations he and his assistants committed would easily fall under the "just cause" portion of his contract, and I would think he could be fired without needing to pay him anything.

But would IU want to take part in the lawsuit that inevitably Sampson will bring? Or did IU already set that precedence with RMK?
