  • Warren WOW!

Saw very little of the game....but WOW did Andrew get off the floor on a drive to the hoop....he made the shot and got fouled...missed the free throw......but he almost jumped over the defensive player, who is 6'6" or so......WOW that was impressive......

He is a special player...its a shame things aren't going better for the team.....

Coach maybe you can shed some light on why our offense ends up with so many shots from the corner. Isnt that the hardest shot in basketball? Wouldnt we be better served getting Warren some shots from the top of the key or going to the basket?
    Can we start winning soon?

Mrcoachdude can certainly answer your question better than I can.

Lakeview one thing I can add as a long time college basketball fan is that you should check out the offensive schemes that Duke utilizes. Duke has a set in which the guards and or forwards drive to the basket and then kick out to a guard or forward for a higher percentage three at the top of the key. It is effective as defenses collapse to help out on the player driving toward the basket which leaves the outside player with a pretty open shot. (this was one of my questions to the coach this week)

There have been games where Warren has hit virtually every corner 3 he's taken, so I don't think location is the issue.

But that is a harder shot then the top of the key area and its not just Warren that ends up in the corner, its JC and Ruff and to a lesser extent Wilson. It worked well last year but we dont have the same shooters as last year.

Wilson has shot 3's this year, half of which are from the corner, better than he has at any time in his career. Warren has shot well from that spot too. I don't think the corner shot is the issue here. 4 for 27 from 3 means we're missing from everywhere, it was just one of those nights. Heading into tonight's game we were shooting nearly 40% as a team from 3 for the season. Last year we shot 42% as a team from 3, so we're not that far off from that pace, not enough to say scrap the corner shot. The difference in a game like tonight's is that we don't have a Zach Andrews averaging 11 and 7 inside that we can throw it into when the shots aren't dropping, that can defend the post, and that can grab a rebound when we need one.

I agree.. The top of the key three point shot is a much better look for the shooter. I watched the Duke-BC game last Saturday and was thinking that if we ran the Duke sets with our outside shooters, we would be getting much better looks for our three point attempts than what we are currently getting.

Agree..An inside presence opens up the three point shot. But just like real estate, I'll prefer location, location and location for a three point shot anytime.

I dunno, I thought our offense was fine, in that we must have taken 10 totally open "smart" shots that we missed. The problem was with luck or whatever, since usually we put those away. I was actually hoping for some crazy a** stupid shots just to see if those would fall, since nothing else was.

I agree. The offense we ran was fine. We had more than enough open looks to win this game going away if we shoot our average. We simply didn't get it done.

The easiest 3 to take in my opinion is on the inside outside pass....with the idea being the defense will collapse on the interior and then kick it back out for the 3. We seem to get it inside at times, but who collapses when the inside player is of no threat? You do not see many double teams from opposing defenses. The Duke play that Ben has mentioned is a baseline drive and kick or attack from a wing and then skip pass to the weak side. The answer though has been mentioned time and time again....we need an inside threat to make it work with a better consistency....otherwise we will see great nights and not so great nights...

every team has off nights, but there are easier shots to be had. I remember seeing JC miss a 3 that he had to pump fake to get the defense by him the shoot somewhat off balance and missed a big shot late in the game. it was a great fake and a good shot....but would an inside threat have made him open enough to get a better look....yep IMHO

By the way, we got sidetracked quickly to the concept of how to make 3s, and I just want to go back to the original post. That was an AWESOME play! Way to go Andrew!

Personally I like how Warren plays. And tonight things just didn't fall. I talked to him when he got back tonight and he was like yeah nothing would fall for us there. And he was like don't worry we'll bounce back on Saturday. He is a great guy when you get to talk to him. I used to have a class with him and at times I would be like star struck like wow I'm sitting behind one of the basketball players. But talking to him, he is a down to earth good guy.
