The Arizona 3A state basketball tournament starts today. Estrella Foothills is one of the favorites to capture the title. Their record is 27-2 and their first game is Tuesday. Brandon Hawkins is averaging 23.8 and Corey Hawkins 22.8. The East Mesa paper doesn't cover 3A basketball that well, but I'll try to keep you guys informed best I can of their progress. Actually, there was an article in the Chicago Tribune on February 3 about a few die-hard golfers playing golf every Sunday, 52 weeks a year in the Chicago area unless it is thunderstorming (even when it is snowing or raining). The only modifications they make are stepping on the snow behind the ball so that they can get a clean hit, and sometimes wearing snowshoes.

I can't find any articles on the web about their state playoff games, but here is the Class 3A state playoff bracket, and #1 seeded Estrella Foothills has won their first game last night against #16 Alchesay 86-46 to advance to the 2nd round game tonight against #8 seed Sedona Red Rock. From what I can find out about the other teams in the 3A playoffs, Estrella Foothills is the overwhelming favorite to win it all.--

Estrella Foothills has a record of 27-2, but Safford has a 26-1 record with a 22 game winning streak so it won't be easy.

Sorry for the delay, but I do have the latest on Brandon and Corey. Estrella Foothills won last night 92-53 to reach the Arizona 3A championship game Saturday. Corey scored 29 and Brandon 24. They will play Payson, who they defeated 73-45 last month.

Never thought I would say it, but I miss the JS sports page. Hawk's kids team won the 3A State tournament, but I couldn't find a story or a box score in either the Mesa or Phoenix papers. They cover the higher classes more. Maybe coach can find out more.

MMob, FYI, I expect the JS to cover all the classes of basketball in the Peoria area and they do a great job. Much better than the papers I was referring to.
