  • Stumbling upon a little deja vu?

By way of following up on our offensive system and all it entails, and in the interest in learning even more, I was doing a little Googling and came across an article/blog that had several observations of the Suns. There were so many analogs to our season that I couldn't help but post the link here. I like, in principle, the goals and objectives of the Phoenix offense. Given my previous comments about the current state of American basketball being too physical and defensive oriented and neglectful of "puristic" basketball skills (passing, shooting, movement), I like the efforts of a system such as Phoenix's. In fact, I believe the coach has an international FIBA background, so the concepts seem appealing.

I also understand and have mentioned that apparently spacing, driving and outside shooting are keys, hence the guard emphasis. The system is also one apparently predicated on reads, but it can incorporate a three man drive and kick weave that we often see. However, there can be downsides. Feel free to click on the story and see the observations made and how at times one could just about swap out Phoenix for Bradley and Ruffin for Nash, but I would not be ready, like the blogger, to swapout D’Antoni for Les:

ghunt....did you know that Jim Les actually consulted with some of the Suns' coaching staff and utilized what he learned in developing a four-guard offense.

Here is a report from bubraves.com.......

"Following the early departure of 7-foot center Patrick O’Bryant as a NBA Lottery pick in 2006, Les turned to his NBA background as he prepared for the 2006-07 season and adopted an offensive system modeled after the Phoenix Suns. Often utilizing a four-guard lineup, Bradley was one of the most prolific 3-point shooting teams in the country last season, finishing third nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (.420) and fourth in treys per game (9.97), and the Braves shattered The Valley record by draining 349 3-pointers in their 35 games. Two primary reasons Les felt comfortable making the switch last season and again is optomistic about his team’s outlook this year are the skills offered by his current senior guards Ruffin and Crouch."
PEORIA, Ill. -- The Bradley University men's basketball team officially began preparations for the 2007-08 season with a 7 o'clock practice Friday night at Carver Arena.? Beginning his sixth year as the head coach, Jim Les put his roster of 16 Braves through their first official practice of the season on the newly-finished floor.? The Braves will endure two full weeks of practice before their public debut at the annual Red-White Scrimmage Oct. 26 at Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse.? The preseason schedule also will include exhibition games Nov. 1 versus St. Ambrose at Robertson Fieldhouse and Nov. 4 versus Quincy at Carver Arena.? Bradley's 104th season will tip off Nov. 10 when the Braves visit Illinois-Chicago and the regular-season home opener will be played Nov. 14 against Big 12 Conference member Iowa State at Carver Arena.

Here's a thread we have about the meeting between Jim Les and the Phoenix Suns

Of course, from 2006. Thanks for the link, though.
